F1 2001 - make your version of F1 Papy/Sierra!

by Arto Wik » Sun, 14 Oct 2001 08:14:45

Well, ..., I have tried to get in love to F1 2001...
There are a couple of things that harm me in this project:

Making the sim work fluently seems to be a big problem:
getting over 10fps at the start of Suzuka seems to demand
a lot of work... And my system is not a low end one:
AMD 1.13, GF2 GTS (driver 12.90), ...

An ff would be nice! A good ff, not any "EA ff" ..... :-/

Just for fun I tried the good old N4 (and of course GPL :-)
and once again I found the professionalism, of how well
Papyrus/Sierra make their products!!!

Is there really no hope that they would make a modern F1
simulator based on the engines (physics, graphics...) of
N4 (and thus GPL)???

Do you hear me, Papy/Sierra? Listen, please!     :-)

How many 'Modern' F1 sims are out there?  Criminey!  Why would Papyrus
want to spend two-four years coding something that has to compete with
almost a half dozen products?  And of those, 3 are published by major
distributors with Name brand identity already established.  So you see there
is really no REASON for Papyrus to venture into such crowded waters.  A gem
covered in a field of rocks is just another rock.
Of course I said this about the Athlon Patch for GPL as well,<<so you can
see I am not a good indicator>>...."we'd NEVER see such a patch," I
said...hehehe(pssst I also said we'd never see another CART title from
Papyrus....can Lightning Strike Thrice?)
btw...that gts is letting you down some AND you can up that AMD several
levels, everybit helps.
also have you been running F12k+1 in a window?  Check out the various
threads going on.

I agree!

The graphics have a 'breathing' effect to them.  Lots of slow down's.  Seems
like it's always doing some sort of 'time compression', similar to what
Grand Prix 2 did (but not nearly as well).

Also, I have yet to get my MSFFW to work properly with it at all.

No, no, no!  Modern F1 is boring!!!  :-)  And the market is saturated.

What about using the N4/GPL engine to create a super-doopa touring car game?
We could have 'BTC Touring[*]', Super Touring, Super Production, DTM, Oz V8
classes etc.

Heck, if the physics were up to the N4/GPL standard, I'd pay 50ukp or more
for a 'BTC Touring' game, even if it only had a couple of tracks!!!

Nah... they can listen to me!  ;-)

IF!  they could add some grip to the cars, so they could bounce off each
other without spinning, and IF they could add side mirrors that could be
knocked off and IF the modeled the glory years of BTCC from when Renault,
Honda, and Nissan all had stellar teams...THEN...I'd go for it in an
instant..(oh and Papy has to figure out how to model track bumps better)

Pretty simple stuff.  I'd even be happy with the existing N4/GPL tracks!

Oh, the Super Touring cars, eh?  I dunno...  In a way, I'd like to see
those, but I think the new-for-2001 'BTC Touring' cars would be more fun to
drive!

True!

They haven't gotten up to speed yet with N4, but they do have most of the
GPL tracks converted for use with n3, The TPTCC touring/V8 league at the
uspits.com.  It's not a true class series, but a 'one size fits all' type.
Due to the limitations of N3.  They will be moving to N4 eventually.  The
pits also has a video of the N4 Winston Cup car rumbling around Monaco.  Not
a classic sim in the sense of N4 or F1 2001 that models all the minutae of
the form, but it does provide some pretty good road racing, both online and
off.

[ Richard wants an N4/GPL-based touring car sim! ]

Hmm... so there could be a 'The Pits Touring Car' add-on for N4?  That would
be pretty good.  Anyone have any ideas as to when such a thing might appear?
