Onroad or offroad?
Race cars or sports cars?
Arcade handling or realistic handling? (or somewhere in between?)
For newbie, I'd say NFS: Porsche Unleashed for onroad.

If you are willing to invest some time then I refer you to Stefan's posting
:-)
GPL is an *incredibly* frustrating sim to learn but it rewards your efforts.
You will spend the first week or so discovering new and exciting ways to
launch yourself into the scenery (and that's when you're not trying to...).
Start slow, touring speed almost and gradually learn what the limits of the
cars are. Jump in like your playing a "Need For Speed"-type sim and you'll
come to hate GPL very quickly.
The graphics are almost primitive now but the physics model will keep you
coming back for more. After driving GPL you'll really come to appreciate
racing with massive amounts of power but without downforce.
Dale.

P.S. If you don't care for oval racing then I think Swedish Touring
Car Championship 2 is a great little sim that doesn't get talked about
much here because it was never released state side. You can order it
from www.softwarefirst.com in the UK though.

NASCAR Heat is also a good starting point -- even if you don't like
NASCAR, the "Beat the Heat" scenarios are a TON of fun. There are
plenty of new non-NASCAR mods coming out (and lots of new tracks), so
this one has a LOT of life left in it, even for the non-NASCAR bunch.

As far as dated graphics are concerned, I haven't seen too many sims
that are better once the add-ons are applied!!! But we all know it's
not the graphics that keep us Hotlapping and watching replays[aliens]
till the wee hours trying to knock off a tenth or
so....................Kajun_II
Weren't we all GPL newbies once? I don't think experience of other
sims helped particularly with getting to grips with GPL.
I might suggest they try a 9 hole pitch and putt course first though.
People get turned off things when they are too frustrating. I still
recommend STCC2. :-)
