CPR: BEST racing sim yet

by DAVID G FISHE » Wed, 12 Nov 1997 04:00:00

I wanted to give an overall opinion of the game, no specifics today. I have
the Gold preview version of the game and since it may be released as early
as this week, there's a few things I'd like to say. The
more I play this sim, the BETTER it gets. After a week or so of really
exploring the game, improving my skills, and diving into all the features,
I am EXTREMELY impressed by CPR and have no doubt that it will lead the way
in racing sims from here on out.
The feedback and constructive criticism which I've read on this
newsgroup has obviously been important to the CART team at Microsoft and
they are already preparing a patch to address people's major concerns. It's
also obvious that the goal of the CART team and the people at TRI is simply
to make this the best sim ever. Why do I think that? Three reasons: 1.Most
important is the
game itself. I like it for many reasons. Graphics, sound, handling,
options, depth of control, incredible detail, Game Zone (will have to wait
just a little longer to race more of you),  it's
future (improvements, patches, updates), the ability to use this game as a
base for internet competition (tournaments, leagues, web sites ((which are
already popping up and are very good)), but most of all, and most
important, I think, is it feels like I'm actually driving an Indy car
around a real race track. Which is what a sim is SUPPOSED to do. I will go
ahead and say the word, it's also a lot of "fun".
                                             2.The monitoring of, and
especially the resposes to, people's requests and concerns regarding all
the aspects of the game, by the CPR developers, made a big impression on
me. I've read almost all
the postings on this newsgroup, and the private newsgroup for other Gold
preview owners, and the goals of CPR are clear.
                                             3. The soon to be released
patch. The quickness that this is being done says a lot.
There seems to be some people who, no matter what, have to wine and
complain about everything (some live on here and you know who you are) and
will never be satisfied. If you get the full version of CPR and don't like
it, then probably nothing in sim racing will ever make you happy. For
everyone else, do yourself a big favor and buy CPR and enjoy.

Rubbish, I'm quite happy with GP2 and ICR2. CPR is newer but in
my humble opinion is not better (well thats the demo at least)
and I buy things that are better not newer.

Would you dump your '94 ferrari for a '97 ford?

I've got a 3Dfx card so I really wanted CPR to be a great sim,
sadly it isn't, but there is hope for it in the future.

Just for the record David, how long have you been driving racing sims?

Ah, finally the definitive statement on CPR. An unbiased opinion from
someone who can really understand and appreciate the point of view of
others.

If you can't take off your rose-tinted glasses and see the flaws that
exist in an otherwise excellent product, you've only yourself to blame
when the patch or next version has the same trouble. It is possible to
acknowledge problems in something you otherwise like, the fawning
praise does nothing.

Cheers!

John,
Rose-tinted glasses? Not acknowledging flaws? Half of my posting addressed
the forthcoming patch (for the games flaws) and Microsoft's response to the
complaints regarding the game. RE-READ my comments again carefully. I
didn't see the need to go into detail about exactly what's wrong with the
sim. The feedback from people on this newsgroup and other Gold previewers
has done that already. Sorry to disappoint you with a positive review. Hope
it didn't ruin your day.

You must have a differant 'game' to mine....!  I DO enjoy GP2, IndyII
and Nascar I/II, but have yet to see the same qualitys in CART.  It
looks pretty, I will give you that, but it has a dreadful controller
configureation procedure....the car feels 'dead' and does not respond
like in other syms I have tried.  Its very 'arcady'.  Hopefully, if CPR
are taking all this in.....things may improve.  I hope so, more good
syms the better.

No need - perhaps take some of your advice and read what I posted. My
comments were a tongue-in-cheel rebuke of your overly patronising
closing comments, telling people what would and would now make them
happy. Why even bother to evaluate it ourselves when we have you to
tell us where we're going wrong?

"If I don't like CPR then probably nothing in sim-racing will ever
make me happy"?! I'm not sure how wrong a person can be, but you're
pushing the envelope on that one.

Cheers!

slide, you cannot get the back out under power when you're moving.>>

You're kidding, right?  I have done this quite a bit, particularly on Turn 6 at
Laguna Seca when I get too aggressive in it.

Garbage!!
If you are that much impressed by CART PR (full version) then all I can
say is that you are easily satisfied.  This "sim" is a joke at the
moment and until something is done about the diabolical behaviour of the
AI then it will remain a joke.

When will developers new to a particular genre do their research
properly?  Any sim-racer worth two burnt sticks could tell them that the
two most important aspects of a proper simulation are dynamics and AI
behaviour.  Get them wrong and the result is garbage.  Get them right
and THEN concentrate on the gloss, bells and whistles.

At the moment this product is glossy rubbish and it is well nigh
impossible to actually race against the AI.

Any other flavors besides cheel?  Personally, I go for the spicy
IndlessCar-II over the CRAT-PR stuff.  =)

Depends a lot on the setup. If you take the advice offered by accessing
the help for the setup items (not the Race Engineer as I only have the
demo) then you end up with a car that handles pretty realistically and
will break loose if thrown around. But if you apply the knowledge of a
real world race engineer such as Doug Arno you get a stable setup that
can be thrown around in an unrealistic manner.
