When in neutral you mean?

Heel and toe is when the right foot operates the brake and at the same
time rolls onto the throttle to blip while going through neutral during
the down change sequence. This stops the rears from braking away. GPL
automatically adds a throttle blip. You don't need the clutch at all.

<fingers in ears> You *can't* say stuff like that in public! It's just
not fair to raise our expectations :-)

Hi Gerry,

Nope, with the clutch engaged. You'd usually do it to stabilize the car, or
to be on the throttle earlier, or to keep the drive strain under tension.

........and was standard driving practice - on AND off the racetrack - in
the days before syncro gearboxes made an appearance.

The ability to come down through the gears cleanly, without clashing the
gears,  whilst braking for a corner is an art and separates the men from the
boys.

<raises hand>

But I have a note from my mother that says I don't have to heel and toe
if I don't want to....

Nope.
Rarely would one downshift without using the clutch.........well, certainly
no-one with whom I was associated, anyway.
I did it once in a mate's Ford Prefect. There was a big CLUNG-KK as the
gears engaged but, by some miracle, I managed to avoid leaving gear teeth
all over the road!:)

Upshift, yes, though I didn't like to do it, particularly when in someone
else's car.
But I was taught to always use the clutch when downshifting.

(We are talking "crash" or non-synco gearboxes here, of course).

Bruce.

You don't need to de-clutch with a straight cut gearbox.

Ok, talk me though my imaginary approach to T3 at silver in my MX5 using
this technique. Then tell me how this would work in a real Lotus 49.

In the GPL era the F1 driver didn't have to use the clutch. This can
even be done in a modern road car. You spin the the transmission with
the   gearbox in neutral, and when the speed of all the spinning metal
parts match, that's when you pop it in the next lowest gear.

No, go on, indulge me. :)
