GPL and Radeon 9700 pro

by Stev » Thu, 20 Feb 2003 16:09:44

I just went from a Voodoo 5 to a Radeon 9700 pro and the problem i
have in GPL is it won't let me pick any resolutions past 640x480 any
ideas whats up with that. I loved the Voodoo 5 in GPL but i think it was
time to replace her because i also like the Combat Flight Sims as well and
the Voodoo card was really showing it's age in these.
Any help would be great.
Thanks Everyone!
Steve.

Interested to see the replies, I'm going from a V3 to an R9700 Pro. Aside
from GPL, what is your experience so far?

Hi Steve,

Originally, GPL only supported 3dfx and Rendition 3D graphics cards. So now
you have replaced your Voodoo with an unsupported card GPL has reverted to
the software rasteriser. What You need is the Direct 3D or OpenGL rasteriser
which allows GPL to use other 3D cards. I find the OpenGL rasteriser to give
better performance with my Geforce3 card but I don't know which will be best
for your Radeon. The best bet is to install both and see which is best.

You can get them both here
http://gplpp.com/     under utilities. Then select D3D Rasteriser and OpenGL
rasteriser fix

Note: there was a bug in the original OpenGL patch so you want the one at
the bottom of the screen that has been modified by Willi Herrman.

Enjoy

GPL works fine for me with the Radeon 9700Pro.  Using D3D patch.  I can't get
OpenGL to work (with any sims) with this card, but I don't care because the D3D
is so great.

Does WiHerr's OpenGL patch work with the Radeon cards? I was under the
impression that it was mainly for GF cards.

I'm wrong.  Tried to get OpenGL to perform properly w. my ATI but stymied.
What worked spectacularly well w. GF was worse than D3D w. the ATI.  Back to
D3D.  Got confused when I swapped GF4 and ATI back & forth testing some
other stuff.  Sorry.  (Still love WillHerr's patch w. the GF, tho!)

I also went from a V3 to a 9700pro.  Aside from the menu corruption
issue in GPL (mostly fixed in the 3.1 drivers), the card is fantastic and
runs every game I've tried perfectly.
