OT: 9700 and 9500 Pro Non-pro???

by Iain Mackenzi » Wed, 05 Feb 2003 19:09:34

As a long term nvidia user who is thinking about upgrading my GF3 Ti500, can
someone explain to me the difference between the PRO and non-PRO ATI cards,
and also the difference between the 9500 and the 9700 which as far as I can
see doesn't seem to be much given the prices - only a reduction in clock
speeds!
Thanks
Iain

The 9500 non-pro uses the same board as the 9700 pro. Some clever types
converted the 9500 into a 9700 pro with a soldering iron, opening up the
pipelines from 4 to the 9700 pro's 8, but that's not necessary now, a safer
software conversion is available, with the corresponding savings. I'm kinda
bitter about this 'cause the 9500 non-pro never made it to South Africa. :-(

The 9500 pro uses a different board, buy it and you're stuck with it.

Interesting. Not many non-pro 9500 cards around but the webshops have
one from Sapphire that will arrive in mid february. Maybe now is a
good time to do the annual gfx-card upgrade :)

Smarter to get the 9700 non-pro and flash it with the pro bios.  Still a $50
savings.

The big difference is in the clock speeds and number of memory pipe lines.
I just went to an FIC oem ATI 9700pro from newegg.com for $295 and love it.
i have not even thought about overclocking it yet. Well ok I thought about
it, but I have not done it yet.
