I know the V5 with FSAA looks great but I'm surprised that a Radeon 9700 with
FSAA and Aniso wouldn't look almost as good?

I think there must be a programm that let's you switch, so that your second
graphic device is used for 3D. Those programs exist since the days when the
first AGP-3D/2D-accelerators came up and you had a Voodoo Graphics or Voodoo
2 installed parallel. If I remember right it was called Glide Switcher,
wasn't it?

I must admit that I've never actually tried running a V5 PCI next to
another full blown 2D/3D card

Same case here, I only have experience with AGP-3D-card+Voodoo2-addon-card,
but I think the problem is the same if you want to use Voodoo5 in PCI-slot.

Pretty much, yes. Technically it's do-able, but probably not worthwhile,
and PCI V5's are not that common either if you don't already have one.
When I bought my Gf4200 initially I ran it with a pair of V2's for gpl. It
didn't take me long to realise that the Gf4 would run a higher res, higher
quality filtering and larger textures than the V2's, and was still faster
in OpenGL than the V2's in GLide.
I have an AGP V5 5500 in my second PC & it runs gpl very well in GLide,
but it still doesn't look as good and I can't run gpl in a window. Your
Ati card might need a bit of tweaking to get gpl running just right, but
imo it's a better and much simpler option than running two gfx cards.

No problem Steve,
I just wanted to say that you should follow Malc's advice even if I am a big
Voodoo5-fanatic.
Today I would only buy a Voodoo for the sense of collecting or building a
cool oldtimer-computer.
GPL should run better with your Ati, because the GPL-patches made by
GPL-community are optimised for Direct3D I think.
