Radeon 9700: how much difference

by Careful with that Axe, Nic » Fri, 27 Dec 2002 12:29:40

I'm looking into upgrading my computer and I was wondering how
difference a Radeon Pro 9700 will make on my machine:

Athlon 750mhz
Windows 98
Hercules 3D Prophet 4500
256MB RAM

And of course, will it work with GPL?

zippo...zip...zero.
You don't have enuf CPU to benefit from a Radeon.  A Nvidia GF4 Ti4200
would be a much better fit.  Always try to upgrade the cpu to the max your
motherboard can support before really laying out big bucks on a new vidcard.

Dave,
Would an Athlon 1.2 (266 fsb) be enough horse power to notice any difference
if I upgrade to it from my GF2 GTS 64? Unfortunately my motherboard (Abit
KT7A Raid) only supports sdram (I have 512 megs though)

Radeon 9700: how much difference

I don't think anything under a 2ghz or a AMD 2000+ would be worth it with a
9700.  I'd go with a 9500 instead, much cheaper and probably better match
with slower CPUs.

Radeon 9700: how much difference

by Rush » Sat, 28 Dec 2002 00:20:41

I recently upgraded from a AMD 1800 and a 266 FSB to a 2700 running a 333
FSB both using the 9700 Pro.  The earlier MB ran at 4X agp and the new
systems runs at 8X. I always running Crucial XMS memory.  Nascar 2002 runs
good on about anything.  F1 2002 is a different story. What really made the
biggest difference was the Direct X 9 and the ATI Catalyst 03.00 drivers.
F1 2002 is so smoother and every just flows.  I still tweak the graphic
settings to amplify the performance but very impressed with the potential
DX9 has and future of Catalyst drivers.  I said all this but I will be the
first to buy the Nvida FX when available.  Now don't run off and download
DX9.  I have read problems with this software along with ATI drivers for
DX9. I didn't.  Seem everyone gave really good advice to the original post
about matching CPU to Video card performance.

yes, maybe.  I just can't recomend the 9700 pro because of it's steep
price.  IF you had a cpu in the XP+ line then yeah, a 9700p would be sweet.
But since you are tied to a slower chip(geez a chip that is over ONE
GIGAHERTZ and we call it slow!!  Who'd a figured that two Christmas' ago?)
Your Vid card will be idling a-lot waiting for stuff to be sent to it.  If
you can't run a newer CPU, the XP 2100+ is under $100 (us)  most places,
then $350 for the Price of a 9700pro just seems like wasted cash.   Unless
you also have plans to jump up the cpu performance later on.
I'd agree with Schooner,  anything under the 2ghz rating is probably a
waste for a 9700 pro.  You Definately WILL see increased performance, but
the price is pretty steep when you can probably get MORE performance from a
cpu upgrade at Half the cost.
The Gf4 price is plummeting, the 9500pro is about a $100 less than the
9700pro, either one of those would seem to be a better fit for your current
hardware.

Doug

I have an Abit KT7A (non-raid) board V.1 and after flashing the BIOS, I am
able to run an AMD Athlon XP2000 (1667Mhz).  I believe that it can actually
take an XP2100, but I didn't think it was worth the extra 15.  I think you
can get one of these processors for around 60 now.  If you are in the UK
try www.ebuyer.com

Hope this helps

Radeon 9700: how much difference

by Careful with that Axe, Nic » Sat, 28 Dec 2002 08:12:18

Thanks for your comments and suggestions, today I went over to the local
CompUSA and picked up a new motherboard and an Athlon 2400XP chip.  As
the money comes along I'll get some more memory and get it all
installed.  Then I'll look for a new card.

Thanks again,

NIck
