I turned on 4xFSAA and at 1600x1200, and frame rate was NOT affected
at all.

What sim was that in?
Can you possibly post a link to some screen shots of it on and off.
What sort of frame rates are you getting?

NR2k2, and the frame rates depend on the track (where you are on the
track, what's happening in front of you, and what view your drive
in), but they haven't gone below 35, and have been as high as 125,
and yes - that's WITH 4X FSAA turned on.

1600x1200 screen shots are gonna be huge, but I can put some sections
of screenshots up.  I'll do it when I get home from work tonight.

GPL doesn't seem to be affected by FSAA settings.  Maybe I'm doing
something wrong in that sim...

It's nice to know this card is good since it costs a bazillion $$.

Pretty sure GPL only runs 16bit and FSAA only works in 32 bit.

Sounds like good frame rates.  What all settings do you have on for
graphics?  Is everything maxed out?

That's another impressive feature of the 9700 - it does FSAA only in 32bit,
but GPL uses 16bit :-)

What happens if you set your screen to 32-bit and then run GPL in a
window?

(OK, so I'm curious...)

I honestly don't know, but since the graphics in GPL are only 16bit, I think
setting a different screen resolution doesn't help.

Well...I volunteer to test it if someone will send me a 9700 ;-)

Yep...installed my 9700 last week.  1600 X 1200...all options maxed...draw
distance maxed. NR2002 looks awesome.  Even my wife said she could notice
the difference...so it had to be REALLY good.

By the way...I haven't seen a frame rate hit with aniso. filtering either
!!. BUT, I get transparent or "ghost" cars occasionally. Not totally
translucent, but not quite opaque, either. Bah! It doesn't matter when I'm
leading!

I turned on aniso, but it didn't appear to make any diff in the
quality of the image.  Maybe I just don't know what to look for...

I only have 30 cars drawn ahead because I've only been in a couple of
online races that had more than 25 or so.  Other than that,
everything is on.

I also noticed that the smoke and dirt clouds look more real.

And you think the NV30 (whenever and even if it will come out by 2004) is
going to be cheaper? ROFL!

The 9700pro is $320.00 right now. By the time the NV30 comes out it will be
down to probably around $300 or even less.

What's the NV30 gonna cost? Try $400-500. It will not be cheaper than
$400.00, guaranteed! And it won't be all that much faster than the 9700
either if at all. When the NV30 comes out I think ATI cards will start
flying off the shelf.

There is no way I can get those kinds of framerates with my 9700 and 1900XP
with everything maxed at 16x12x32 4xFSAA and 16x Anios.  Are you racing with
43 cars with view/drawing of 43 out the front and rear and sitting at the
back of a 43 car field??  Maybe it's a CPU bottleneck but I think when
people here are talking NR2002 and saying "all graphics maxed" that they are
not realizing that everything truly is maxed.  Also, I think simulation and
realistic damage mode creates a big fps slowdown because in a multi-car pile
up, with all the dent and debris modeling, the sim really falls to it's
knees in framerate.

On the plus side, the visuals truly are stunning and with the 9700Pro, D3D
is better looking(more vibrant colors) and faster than OGL IMHO.

I have no idea how the nv30 will compare with a current 9700Pro or what the
price of it will be however I would expect it to retail at $399.

One thing is for certain, Nvidia missed a very important product cycle.
Maybe it was because they hired a bunch of former 3dfx engineers?!!  :)
Anyway, comparisons between the nv30 and 9700Pro are really pointless
because the R300 will not compete with the nv30.  The R350 will probably be
out before nv30 so that would be the nv30 competition and while nvidia is
struggling with all of their resources to make this year's card before
spring of next year, ATI is already working on next year's technology
positioning themselves to spoil the eventual introduction of the nv30.

I can already see the sales angle, Nvidia's first generation DX9 product vs.
ATI's second generation DX9 product.  (Of course, DX9 probably still won't
be out yet!)   My or my, how history keeps repeating itself.

Hi Tim.

I'm running a 2.4 p4, 256ram & xp home. I run 16 x 12, 4xFSAA, 8X Anios, 43
out front, 6 rear, all details maxed, d3d. (d3d & ogl don't seem to make a
diff in frame rate, YMMV.)

At Daytona backstretch, rear of field I am 40 frames +-5 (with AI cars).
Online...I don't look at frame counter too often, but I have never seen it
below 50 when I did.

BUT(!), I turn down active sounds played 8. Even before I upgraded system
last week, less sounds=better frame rate. You may want to try that.

I can't say it enough...I love with my 9700.
