I've been having this problem with GPL that when I go from pits to the car,
sometimes the screen goes black, I see the mouse pointer and hear the engine
sound but nothing else happens. The only way out seems to be ctrl-alt-del and
killing the Gpl processes.

Now I did some testing and it seems that the problem only happens if I am
using resolution 800x600 or higher.

I cannot live with the lockups, but I may be able to live with only 640x480
resolution, but I really would like to race with the higher resolutions. Any
ideas what could be wrong?

Video card, processor, amount on memory, amount of cache?

I sometimes get this problem (not often thank God) I have just upped my RAM
to 192mb. How much do you think is necessary Toni?

      I have the same problem.   P2 400, 12 meg CL V2 SLI, 128 Meg RAM.   I
only get the lockups when I race at  higher than 640x480.   There is
obviously a difference because when you switch from***pit to menu while at
640x480, you see "tv" static then almost instantly your at the menu.   When
I run 800x600 or 1024x768, you go from***pit to black screen for at least
a sec or two, then to menu.   I'd say 50% of the time I will hang at that
black screen never getting to the menu.    I choose to run at 640x480
because of this.   I've heard the arguments about Glide versions being the
culprit, but my own tests have never confirmed this.   It appears to have
something to do with the res changing when going from***pit to menu and
it's not being done properly either at hardware or at software level.

Try using the Glidewrapper patch and set the option to have the  menu
resolutions the same as your in car resolution.  Maybe this will solve
your problems.

YES! This solved my problem! I was already using this wrapper to set the
mirror refresh rate. In fact the readme-file with this wrapper talks about
problems with Banshee-cards when changing the resolution between driving mode
and menu screens, but it seems that I had something like this with my Voodoo 2.

The only drawback is that the menus are also at the higher resolution but that
is a minor nuisance.

Now back to racing... :)
