GPL locks when starting a session

I know you all are sick and tired of these "GPL locks..." messages but I
think I have another case... I have PowerColor Voodoo 2-card and it runs
fine in the menu screen and I have Glide 2.53 etc... But sometimes, when I
enter the car, the screen just goes black, I see the mouse pointer and hear
the car sound but nothing else happens. This is especially annoying if I
had a good qualifying and go to the race. The screen is black, I can also
hear the other cars but the only thing I can to is ctrl-alt-del and kill
the Papyrus Window-task and after that, the GPL-task. After this I can
restart GPL and it may run fine.

I have no other games that use the Voodoo 2-card so I cannot verify it it
is a problem with the card, 3D Mark runs always fine.

Any ideas?

I believe I read something about this either at  www.3dfx.com or at
www.voodoo.com . Look for something that mentions a black screen.
That's all I can think of at the moment.

I have exactly this problem too.  Have Glide 2.53, and 90% of the time GPL works
fine, then occasionally black screen & mouse pointer when I get in the car.  Any
more ideas?

I doubt this is your problem - but for info anyway

I use the Schedular in Windows Plus to set of a DOS (batch) based
backup.  As soon as this runs (ie I forget to disable it before
starting GPL) it produces the symptoms you describe.

I suspect any stuff trying to get at the screen could cause problems -
such as the screen saver?

I killed every possible program, disabled the screen saver and tested.

I started GPL, went to training in Monza, got onto the track drove out of the
pits, pressed esc and return and got back to the pit screen. Went back onto
the track and repeated this for 4 times before the screen went black... :(

This is really frustrating... :(

this same thing happens to me, i have dual voodoo2's, the latest drivers from 3dfx,
and DX 6.1, it happens in other 3d games as well, the only work around was to run
GPL in 640x480, this stops the 'resizing' of the 3d window, and stopped all black
screens, 640 looks about the same in GPL anyway, isn't it fun to hear the cars roar
away when you have nothing but a black screen??

GPL locks when starting a session

This happens to me too. Only I never get to the games. The pc just locks
on a black screen, I then have to reboot. Then the games (GPL,Quake2)
run just fine. This only happens about 80% of the time. I've got the
latest Diamond Monster drivers, with the 2.53 glide in GPL. Is it a
resolution thing? I run GPL in 800x600 and Quake 2 in 1024x926 ( I think
thats it ) I also have dx6.1 and no conflicts in the system. Does
anybody know how to fix this? I've looked at some FAQ's to no avail.

Jepp, get the win 98 fix from microsoft and u are ok ! Dont remember where i
found
it but it works for me .

If you haven't seen the solution to this problem which I later posted here,
(thanks so somebody who pointed it out, was it Carver?), get the Glide-wrapper
which can be used with Voodoo2 cards to set the mirror refresh rate
from http://www.racesimcentral.net/

You can use this wrapper to configure the resolution of the menu screens. I
set it to 800x600 and now the menus dont fill the full screen but that is a
minor nuisance as the game doesn't have to change resolutions any more, it
does not lock up anymore.
