GPL: what wheel are you using & how many turns from lock to lock ?

by * Leon » Sun, 11 Apr 1999 04:00:00

HI

It seems obvious to me now
to excell in GPL there are a few things needed
in the wheel:

1) Separate axis for brake and accel
( although I did not accept that at first, but
to get the fastest time, this is what's needed )

2) Good wheel with wide turning angle
to spread out the minute / small micro steering
adjustment.

This is where the wheel is better than the joystick
( joystick has 30deg from lock to lock )
is make minute /micro adjust very difficult.

Pls tell me which wheel you are using that comes close to
these 2 requirements
I am seriously thinking of a wheel ( just because of GPL
!!  )

GPL: what wheel are you using & how many turns from lock to lock ?

I use the Thrustmaster "Formula 1" wheel, also known as a NASCAR Pro. I
have had it for 8 months now and have had just one small problem with a
dirty brake pedal pot.

This is what I have but it's not necessary to have it in order to run
fast times. Just look at Tadej Krevh!

I actually have a pretty small range from full left to full right.
Partly due to my driving position - it is uncomfortable for me to move
my arms too much because I have the steering unit resting on my knees.

Cheers!

I have had a TM Nascar Pro since the GPL demo was released about a
year ago, and have used it almost every day since for GPL. The wheel
works fine with a couple of problems. I have had one broken pedal
spring, and a switch on the wheel that don't work properly, so I have
to use the stick for gearing now. Apart from that I have cleaned the
steering pot a couple of times.
TM sent me new springs free of charge.

There are wires running through the shaft of the wheel for the wheel
mounted wires.  It sounds as if one of the wires has been "sheared" by
the edges on the slot of the shaft.  You maybe able to repair the broken
wire and then use a plastic sleeve to protect them from this happening
in the future.

I have opened it, and it's the switch that is malfunctioning, not
broken wires. I'll try to get a new switch from TM. Thanks for the tip
anyway.

I ve a TM Nascar Pro too, and never used the wheel butons in GPL nor ICR2
... I only use the stick for gearing ... realism ... no sequential gearboxes
in 1967, but ...:)
