GPL and the shakes...

by Marc Collin » Sun, 21 Feb 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

Just wondering who can calibrate their controller at the linear end of the
spectrum and NOT get the shakes in GPL (the drivers arms quivering or worse
when you drive).  I use a 1% deadzone, and for comparison, set the steering
to 14 and the slider almost all the way or all of the way to the left.

Please detail your equipment and results...I'll start the ball rolling.

P2 - 450

Thrustmaster Nascar Pro attached to SB PCI 128 - moderate shaking
Thrustmaster Nascar Pro attached to SB Live! - minor shaking
Saitek R4 Mode 1 attached to SB PCI 128 - *** shaking
Saitek R4 Mode 2 attached to SB PCI 128 - *** shaking
Saitek R4 Mode 3 attached to SB PCI 128 - *** shaking
Saitek R4 Mode 1 attached to SB Live! - moderate to *** shaking
Saitek R4 Mode 2 attached to SB Live! - moderate to *** shaking
Saitek R4 Mode 3 attached to SB Live! - minor to moderate shaking

These results show up in all games and in the Control Panel screens...but of
course GPL gives the best visual feedback but is the least tolerant of
controller / game port problems.

Thanks!

Marc.

GPL and the shakes...

Hello
I have just bought the MS Sidewinder FF wheel. I have the slider fully
linear, and in most setups I use 15% steering ratio. I get no shakes at all.
After two days with this wheel I can match or better all my previous times
(e.g. at Monza (lotus) 1m30.01, at the Glen (lotus) 1m06.95: nothing great I
realise but I'm improving). I'm really pleased with my new wheel. My
equipment is PII-350, 128 Mb, MSFF into SB AWE64.

Logitech Wingman Formula

Ensoniq AudioPCI
Linearity about 1mm from left
0% deadzone in dinput.dll
Steering Ratio from 14:1 to 19:1

No shakes - the wheel does use pots, but has an A/D converter and some firmware
smoothing that zaps the shakes, or what a Logitech software guy described to me
as "the Parkinson driver".

Hi Marc,

The key for me was installing an MX300 soundcard.  Absolutely rock solid
calibration now.
I've heard similar from other MX300 owners btw.

regards,
Patrick

Thanks for the replies so far!!

I should add that I also tried:

Logitech Wingman Formula attached to SB PCI 128 - rock solid

and...

I am now on the 4th R4...supplied by Saitek...as we were sure that the first
3 from the store must have been part of some bad batch (but, no, they are
all acting the same).

Marc.

What wheel are you using and what game port did you use before the MX300?
What shakes, if any did you get before and they were eliminated by just
changing the sound card?

Thanks....especially for your F1RS and MGPRS2 sounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

And did you use the wheel with a different game port before you got the
PDPI?  Which one and what was the result of the switch?

I don't know whether there are large differences between the R4 and R4
FF wheel, but with the FF version I have absolutely no shaking. It
calibrates at a range from 1 to 1024, and when you hold it still, it
stays _absolutely_ in position, there is no change in the Control
Panel screen. I have a PCI 128, too.
However, I sometimes have problems with my pedals - they sometimes are
awful shaking, but pressing and releasing it several times usually
solves the problem. Perhaps a dust or potentiometer problem, I guess
(I'm not sure whether the R4 FF pedals are digital or analogue).

My R4 on an SB128 PCI is fine....

I have had "the shakes" & I think I eliminated it by stepping back from
DirectX 6.1 to Direct X 6.
