GPL: Help Needed With Wheel Shake

by Tom & Jiaw » Tue, 13 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Please help if you know what is wrong with my GPL set up.  I have a
PowerSpec with the 400 mhz Celeron running a 16 meg VooDoo Banshee
graphics card.  The following problem happens when I play GPL.  As
soon as I fire up the game and am in the practice session I see the
drivers hands shaking slightly back and forth.  It increases as I
increase the amount of linearity of the controller.   This driver hand
shake causes driving to be very difficult as I like driving with a
very linear setup.  There, the shake is highest.  Some have related
this to me as a heat problem but it happens just as soon as I turn on
my PC.  There isnt time for heat build up there.  Also, I use an Ultra
PC racer as a controller.  Today I tried using a friends controller
and the same thing happens.  One thing I noticed is that the shaking
stops when there is no controller attached.  It returns the second
that a controller is plugged in.

Is this a bad sound card?  The PC has a ESS 1869 sound chip.

How can I stop this problem?  It has really destroyed the fun of this
game.  This PC is only a few months old!

Please help!

thanks,

tom

I'm not sure if it's the exact problem I had, but my sound card game
port gave me the worst case of joystick drift I've EVER seen.  If
that's your problem, a PDPI L4 digital game card will solve the
problem.  If you'd like to see my review of the PDPI board, check out

Enjoy!

I used to get that on my T2 but a SBLive! eliminated it.  The Quick fix I
used to use was to leave the cover of my T2 permanently unscrewed and heat
the pots with a hairdryer until the shaking stopped.  This needed to be done
each time out.  I may seem like a pain but it worked.

The key to prevent handshaking is to
stop drinking Jack Daniels for 1~2 weeks

and regular sleep........................it works for me.

Seriously the problem is the soundcard
go to control panel, multimedia and some
where in there enable "DMA "

shutdown, power off and restart
you should have steady hands by then.

This is almost certainly due to a dodgy gameport. Not sure about your
sound chip? but you really want either a PCI soundcard (and thus a PCI
gameport) or a dedicated PCI gameport (eg: Thrustmaster)

It might be your game port but it might also be your controller.....

I had a Saitek R4 wheel and that had the shakes really badly (also yanked
the steering left evrytime I braked)

I exchanged it recently for a ThrustmasterFormula 1 (same as a Nascar Pro) -
end of shakes....

I.

The PDPI L4 game port is the best thing since
sliced bread.  Short of 3d accelerators, I don't
think there has been a bigger advancement in
technology that improves PC simulations.  The
PDPI card eliminates all joystick jitter in
Win9X applications.

I originally turned off the wheel and arms in
GPL because of all the joystick jitter.  With
the PDPI card, the wheel is perfectly solid,
but I decided I don't like having the wheel
on anyway :)

If you don't have one, *get one*!

trie in the game controller setup to switch "poll with interrupts" off, if this
doesnt work it might be the soundchip (I had the same problem with a Diamond
sonic impact S70, which was exchanged (by Diamond) to a S90, now everithing is
fine. ) You could also trie a digital Yoystick (microsoft or so) in digital
mode, they dont read the potentiometers analog, but transmit digital data
through the MPU401 (this is the midi Port).

Tom,

I had this exact same problem and I tried just about everything that
has been sugested here, all to no avail.  My kit includes Celeron

wheel.

Nothing fixed the problem until I bought a MS FF Wheel which has
digital/optical pot encoders.  Installed it and instantly everything
was steady as a rock.  I found that I could control the car with much
more precision once the jitters stopped (didn't stop me flying into
the bushes at every available opportunity though ;-) )
