Lately I had some stutters too, allthough not as bad as you mention -
yesterday Speedfreak told me he solved his stuttering problem by
installing Dx8.1. I will try this myself tonight, let you know if it
works.

Hi all - long time no post :-)

I recently upgraded to a new system (P4 1.7, 256Mb, Geforce2, Win XP) and now
I'm having trouble with virtually all my games.

The problem I have with GPL is stutter in replays and occasionally in driving
mode as well. Replays are basically unwatchable because they run fine in short
bursts but get major stutter every few seconds. If something like a crash
happens it's almost like watching it at 3-4fps.

In the car itself things are fine, although it doesn't seem to run quite as
smoothly with the GPLEA car patches applied. I would have thought my new
machine would be able to handle them :-)

I've used the GPL 1.2 patch, D3D patch and CPU fix, got the latest drivers and
double-checked my core.ini. Has anyone else had a problem like this, & are
there any known fixes?

I get a stutter in GPL on the first lap.  I can fix it by turning off
hardware acceleration for my sound card.

Dx8.1 has improved things though - it's hardly noticeable now if I
forget to turn off the acceleration before playing.

Try disabling   'auto insert notification' on your CD ROM drive(s) it's in
the 'settings' for your cd rom in device manager, this may be causing
stuttering with soundblaster live cards 'looking' for the cdrom every few
seconds. ( something I read )  .jv

Thanks for the tip - but I don't think it will help.  I already have
auto insert turned off, and I don;t have a SB Live :-)

(My soundcard is a TB Santa Cruz)

Oops - I forgot Win XP has DX8.1 installed as standard. Oh well :-)

I'm going to try the OpenGL patch when I get home from work, maybe
that will do it.

Apart from that I think it could possibly be related to sound. One of
the reasons my new machine was fairly cheap is because it only came
with some crappy on-board intel sound device. It does OK generally but
in N4 the engine sound is completely screwed up, maybe it's having
some effect in GPL too.

My card is also a Santa Cruz,  Abit KG7 board and a athlon 1.4. I experience
static and stutter I'm using the latest drivers and also tried disabling
ACPI putting the card on its own IRQ did not help.

Then try disabling direct sound acceleration.  Works a treat for me.

Ya I've tried that also. IF I disable it completely the sim sounds terrible
a little better then halfway is an improvement but still is stutters and
static is more prevalent.

Curious as to what PCI slot your SC is in.

Throw away your SBLife.
Did the trick for me. Obviously collided with the (switched off) onboard
soundchip.

I have the same problem, but strange as may seem, the stuttering has
gradually been reducing over the months. I too have a P4 1.7, 256Mb and
GeForce2, though I have Win ME. I have used the same patches as you.
The problem has reduced as I have installed more tracks (from the internet),
and although I am not sure if the two are related I cannot think of any
other reason.
Regards
Peter
