GPL: stuttering problems (sound related?)

by Bert Hilberin » Sun, 17 Jun 2001 15:04:00

For over 3 years I'm driving GPL on my 233MMX (with a whopping 32 MB, and
for the last year with a Voodoo2) without major problems; the biggest
problem has always been my driving ability (lack of...). My other hobby
(constructing aircraft/car scale models) has kept me busy for the past
months, but last week I got tired of sniffing glue and filler and I thought
it was time to connect my LWSF again.

Unfortunately, I encountered a strange problem:

1.    The sound 'cracks' from time to time.
2.    Although I normally have a frame rate of more than 30fps (driving
alone, that is...), the screen freezes for some tenths of seconds from time
to time (just annoying enough to drive into a wall)
3.    It doesn't happen at random, but at certain places at a track. For
example: on the straight at Monza, or just after the second Lesmo
accelerating towards the bridge. In the last case the following happens
(every time): I change gear (2nd - 3rd; or 3rd - 4th; or 4th - 5th), after
changing gear I hear a cracking sound, and then the screen freezes for -say-
0.15 seconds. On the straight it freezes longer, and without me changing
gear.
4.    When I crash really hard, GPL sometimes crashes with a 'Invalid page
fault in DSOUND.DLL'. I've had crashes before, but never 2 or 3 in just a
few laps.

I suspected that the Glide patch (for decreasing the mirror updates) might
cause the problem for some reason, because it was the last thing I changed
in GPL. However, removing it makes no difference. I also tried my original
Glide.dll; no difference. And before I forget it: I have nothing else
running on my system (with a 233MMX you can't afford that).

I'm not sure whether the sound is the cause problem (although I haven't
changed the drivers) or just the result. The same goes for the freezing
screen. I thought the problem might be in detail settings (difficulties in
getting 'all that' scenery in memory, and therefore also with the sound),
but even at the lowest settings the problem persists (maybe a bit less, but
I'm not sure).

So: I haven't got a clue, except that probably some change on my system
(unrelated to GPL) in the past 3 months caused this problem. Can somebody
help me out?

Thanks in advance!!!

Bert (GPLRank 'under construction')

GPL: stuttering problems (sound related?)

hi Bert... I use to have a V2 when GPL? came out, definatly related to the V2
causing that crackling sound in GPL... time to upgrade perhaps ?

GPL: stuttering problems (sound related?)

by Bert Hilberin » Mon, 18 Jun 2001 11:42:04

Eric,

The silly thing is that I never had this problem before, and I was quite
happy with my Voodoo2. The problem also isn't related to the other
'stuttering' problems mentioned on R.A.S.: I tried all those tricks before
(to good effect), simply because I need to with my 'dinosaur system'...

Upgrading will take place in 2002 with a completely new system, so I still
have some 7 months to go...

Thanks for your reaction, regards,

Bert

GPL: stuttering problems (sound related?)

by Joachim B?ddeke » Thu, 21 Jun 2001 01:14:27

Hi Bert,

From time to time i discover the same strange freeze & speedup
problem, on a system which is way faster than yours.

Could you give more details of your hardware/OS to track
it down?

My relevant is:

Voodoo 3 - 3500 (16 MB) AGP
Soundblaster Live
Logitech Wingman Formula Force USB
Windows 2000 SP1 (ACPI-HAL)
GPL 1.2 with Glide-Patch

While running in D3D windowed mode i discovered a cpu occupancy
of about 40-50 %. But still sometimes freeze & speedup.

I have no solution yet, but am figuring out. It is somehow
hardware related.

Possible causes are from my point of view:

- Texture swapping from RAM to V3-Ram (16mb not enough?).
- Too slow Voodoo 3?
- USB-instability with VIA chipset.
- SBLive & Via problems
- ACPI IRQ sharing

Joachim
