V2 does 1024x768 in GPL - the 800x600 limit is only for when z-buffer is
used and GPL doesn't use the z-buffer hence 1024x768 is possible.
I'm using a V2 (12MB Monster 3D II) + a P3-450 and in training mode this
is more than enough to max out the fps at 36-37 with all details turned
up to full (n.b. also have Soundblaster Live! which helps a bit).
The "back of grid at Monaco" rating is down to around 18fps in this
setup - though if I push the P3 to 600MHz (still experimenting but seems
reasonably stable - PC133 memory helps!) this goes up to around 30fps.
In the time I've had GPL I've progressed from
AMD K6-200 + software graphics - 8 fps if I was luck!
AMD K6-200 + V2 + everything on - 15-20fps
AMD K6-200 + V2 + minimum graphics 800x600 - 25-30fps
P3-450 + V2 + everything on 1024x768- 36 fps
and I've been amazed at how much more control I feel I've had at each
step up in frame rate + how moving back down the scale I notice that a
display that had seemed smooth now feels very jumpy! I'm also wondering
if with all the extra horsepower whether the physics modelling is
working at a finer granularity.
As for V2 vs Banshee - from what I recall reading the Banshee 3D
performance is lower than the V2. One benefit is that it avoids using 1
PCI slots (V2 + 2D card) which may be a factor.
work ?
?? may be wrong but I thought the texture problem only affected V3's
