N4 Patch won't install! It deleted my Nascar Racing 4 .exe!!

by pw » Fri, 19 Oct 2001 11:28:03

Hi,

I put the patch in the same directory as the game.  I seem to remember
this is how I got around patch problems with Sierra and Papyrus.

Well, I received some error message (as expected!) during the patch
problem, then I tried to run the patch again.  Low and behold it
couldn't find the Nascar Racing 4 exe as it got deleted during the
patching "process".

I didn't see anything on the Papy site about where to put the patch.
Am I not supposed to put it in the same directory as the game?

I guess now I have to reinstall N4!!

Thanks,

-pw

I'm not sure why putting it in your N4 directory would cause that too
happen, but there certainly is no need to run it from within the directory.
Every patch I have installed I have downloaded to a "temp" directory and
installed from there.

Typical Sierra/Papy!

I reinstalled N4 and it AGAIN DELETED THE EXE!  All it left was a
readme for the new version!

I have never seen a buggier and more frustrating patching process,
etc.. than with N4.

Screw the new patch.  Hopefully I can start from scratch and patch to
last version.

So, what could be wrong with my ****, eh?

I had Windows explorer open one time during the install.  I saw the N4
exe vanish!  Twice the patch deleted the N4 exe!  And it's MY fault??

Again, My **** DUDE?????

Did you have any extras installed, or just an ordinary install??

Here is part of the reason I am complaining about Papy/Sierra (and why
I am bothering to respond to someone like yourself is beyond me!):

-I uninstalled N4 and reinstalled it
-It would not load (stuck at the splash screen).  Been there many
times and SO HAVE OTHERS HERE!
-If I remember correctly, that is because the install program can not
handle it's own long file name with spaces in it (that includes the
"Start In" box of the shortcut and the shortcut itself).
-I ran the patch, and it did install w/o any errors and it "finished"
this time.
-But, again, N4 would not run.
-I look in the c:\papyrus\Nascar Racing 4 directory, and THERE IS NO
"NASCAR RACING 4.exe"!  Instead the patch replaced it with
"Nascar~1.exe"

Okay, Know-it-all!  That is MY fault??  How do you suggest I get N4 up
and running now, DUDE!  I know!   Maybe I ought to start smoking the
stuff you are smoking, eh?

N4 Patch won't install! It deleted my Nascar Racing 4 .exe!!

Nah, nothing with my PC.  It's just N4 that has given my problems
since the day it came out.  It is now installed on a brand new (and
different) PC.

The patch did "complete" after I uninstalled and removed it
completely, then repatched it.  But, now it won't run because the
game/patch can't handle it's own long-file names (with spaces in it).

Thanks!

N4 Patch won't install! It deleted my Nascar Racing 4 .exe!!

Even with the older patch, I had this problem on my system. The patch
renames NASCAR Racing 4.exe to NASCAR~1.exe.

I just go back in and rename it and tada. It works.

Now, I'm having a problem connecting with the Sierra server for
multiplayer matchups. It keeps saying my game is out of date, runs the
auto updater, and then says my game is up to date.

I know it's not a CD Key issue :).

Anyone else having this problem?

What fixed my problem is renaming these files back to the long format.

"NASCAR~1.EXE" > "NASCAR Racing 4.EXE"

"RENDSE~1.DLL" > "RENDSERVER.DLL"

"SIERRA~1.DLL" > "SIERRAUPN4RES.DLL"

To see the last 2 files you need to make sure that you are viewing all
files
in the Windows Explorer "View" settings for you N4 folder.

Bob Geddes here is right, it simply renamed the same files that the first
patch renamed too, big deal. Fix the long filenames and the game will run
fine and you will be able to connect to Sierra.

N4 Patch won't install! It deleted my Nascar Racing 4 .exe!!

by Joe Wals » Sat, 20 Oct 2001 01:12:47

I had some problems with the 1.1 patch but lately when I re-installed, when
I used the BHMotorsports DL it was fine.  All the others would give the LFN
corruption.

I tried to patch on 3 different machines with all 4 download sources today
and they each did the LFN corruption.

I'm running WinMe,  three different hardware/software configs and the only
common thing is Me itself.

But...  LeagueMates have patched with Me and 2k without problems so I
dunno...
