NASCAR 3 won't install

by Jeff Georg » Thu, 30 Sep 1999 04:00:00

Anybody else having trouble with this? I cannot get the software to install.
The Install Shield wizard completes to 100% and a Sierra Sports logo comes
up on the screen. However, this is as far as the installation gets. The
system doesn't actually lock, but becomes completely slow and unusable,
requiring a hard reboot. The specs for the system I am using are as follows:

AMD K6 processor
64 MB RAM
400 MB free disk space

Anybody have any ideas?

My guess is that when the install program runs, it requires more swap space from the
drive than before, so you don't have 400Mb free at that point.
If you are running out of space, that could hang the install.
I don't have N3, but it probably takes at least 200Mb of space (check the box or manual).

Actually, I cleared more space to have 600 MB free before install and the
same thing happened. The processor is 266 MHz so I know it meets the minimum
requirements. I even copied the whole CD to disk and tried installing and it
stops at the same point. I tried the install on a lesser system (233 MHz K6
with 32 MB of RAM) and the install continued after it appeared that it was
going to stop on that system, too. I don't know if DirectX has anything to
do with N3 but I do know that on the system I can't get install to work on,
I recently upgraded DirectX (to v. 7, I believe). I spoke to Sierra Tech and
they seem to think I might have a bad CD, though the fact that it would
install on one system and not another seems to dispute that theory. I'm
still thinking of exchanging it for a new copy anyway. Sierra also seems to
think that it has something to do with InstallShield and that I might want
to reinstall Win98. If I do that, will I lose all my current Windows
settings?

Are you running any virus protection software? I have found that Norton's
well sometimes block or slow down Install Shield installs.

I'm running McAfee's Virus Shield but even with that unloaded it doesn't
install. I have to figure this out because I can't see taking it back if it
isn't really a bad CD.

Look at the back of the CD, if you see what look like water marks on the CD
you have a bad press.

Just for the record, the CD looks clean. :) It has to be something with my
other computer. I'm going to mess with it some more and see what happens. I
noticed that the specs at Sierra said something about DirectX 6 so I'm
thinking I might try uninstalling DirectX 7.

NASCAR 3 won't install

I have two machines,  the older one with a fairly new but cheap cdrom
has lots of problems installing software.  I can take a cd that chokes
the HiVal 32xmax cd and put it in my newer system with a toshiba cdrom
and it loads fine.  All cd players are not equal and some may have
difficulty reading a paticular cdrom

I think I resolved the issue. I booted the system as normal and then tried
killing different processes at different boots. As soon as I disabled McAfee
VirusShield I was able to install N3 successfully. This is odd as I have
never had this problem with any other installation.
