N4 'Save Race in Progress' patch???

by Sven Bjorn Bientiense » Thu, 17 May 2001 03:37:33

Is anyone working on one of these and if so, what's the status?? When
Papy left it out of an earlier release (N99 maybe?), it seems like a fan
written patch appeared almost immeadiately. I'm surprised it has taken
so long with N4.
I'm still shocked that it wasn't included in the first place given the
outcry last time. Papy's assertion that being able to save a race in
progress isn't realistic is a crock. Many people want to run full length
races, but don't always have the time to do a 4 or 5 hours session, not
to mention power failures or wives!  :]

I agree 100%. Papy left it out due to laziness, IMO.

N4 'Save Race in Progress' patch???

No one has to my knowledge made a save race patch in GPL, and N4 uses the
same game engine...I'm sort of assuming it can't be done.
I could be wrong though, I usually am...

N4 'Save Race in Progress' patch???

According to the official N4 board the save game feature was left out do to
time constraints. They basically said with the new physics model there was
to much data to save. The thought that was throw around was making it a
yellow flag type situation for the save game. so if say you hit 's' to save
it would throw a yellow flag field would bunch up then it would save the
data. then when it loaded the saved game it would start up under caution. I
have no idea if they (Pappy) are doing anything with it at this time, I
personally doubt that they are.

Also the save game was reinstated by a Papy made ptach as far as I know.

MD, you could well be right about Papy writing that patch. I can't
recall. I just remember someone did it and it made the game far more
viable.

Papy released N2 without the ability to save during a race.  Some time later
they released a patch that added the capability--the only time and the only
ones to do so AFAIK.

That never happened.

N4 'Save Race in Progress' patch???

I don't recall Papy ever stating a reason for not having the save game
feature in N4. I would think perhaps the complicated physics model ( 6d0f)
may have something to do with it, as GPL does not have it and corrrect me if
I am wrong but Heat doesn't either right?
As far as patches for previous versions, N2 came out without a save race,
and they ( Papy) added it in a patch not too long after the release.
As far as I know, there was never a fan written patch for the save game
feature.

Some people do nothing wrong.
The problem is, they do nothing.
And THAT is wrong.

You have got to keep telling yourself...N4 is Not the child of N3.  Any
feature that was in N3/N99 etc is not an automatic transfer to N4.  If you
are looking back, compare it to GPL rather than N3.   If something was in N3
it's a maybe..if it was do-able in GPL then it could be done in N4....but if
you didn't see it in GPL, don't expect it in N4 especially if it USED to be
in N3...

N4 'Save Race in Progress' patch???

Why not a save game feature that would only work when you are stopped in
your pit stall??  I would be satisfied with that, but think that a 500 mile
race (remember how relatively short F1 races are) with no option to save is
unreasonable.

Marc.

My personal opinion is that it's philosophical to the developers, not just a
question of the time it takes to implement it inside the game.  I take the
example of Roller Coaster Tycoon (or any "sim"-type games).  Everybody wants
a sandbox mode, where you have a flat terrain and unlimited money so you can
do anything you want.  But developers never include that mode.  Why?
Because like a save game, it takes something out of the spirit of the game.

Same goes for FPS and the in-level save games.  Some choose to only save the
games between levels (apparent to N4 where we save between races).  You can
do a long race?  Do a shorter one.  That's their philosophy.  It takes
corporate guts to do such thing, btw!

No, Heat doesn't either. But, both GP3 and F1RC do, so it can be done.

Lot's of those games have a sandbox mode.

Financial folly is more like it.

Well you get the point.  Lot's of them have one, lot's of them don't.  It's
just partially the philosophy of the game, it's spirit.  Some require you to
reach a level to access it (that would be fun to implement in N4 LOL!)

Uh yeaaaah N4 really did not go well financially <G>

So does racing a NASCAR race without pit stops.  One thing that Heat did
right is include an adjustable wear factor so that at least you could crank
that up to keep pit strategy part of the game.
