GPL 1.1 and OpenGL - anyone get it working?

by WiNoJo » Sun, 11 Jul 1999 04:00:00

1.0 worked fine using TNT card, 30~36 FPS.  Patch v1.1
installed and I'm only getting 3~5 FPS, game is unplayable.

Tried multiple settings/changes, nothing seems to help.

Anyone have the same problem?  Ideas to try?

GPL 1.1 and OpenGL - anyone get it working?

by WiNoJo » Sun, 11 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Hmmm...

Reinstalled GPL 1.0, re-added the OpenGL patch, still getting
VERY low
FPS.  Starting to think maybe it's my TNT drivers (based on 2.04
I think).

Interesting is when I hit F10 to cycle between the in-car and
out-of-car
views, the framerate will jump up to where it should be, then
slowly fall
back down to 2~6 FPS (this takes a couple of seconds to fall back
this low).

I should have run GPL before patching to 1.1 just to make sure it
was still
running OK after updating the video drivers last week, but I
didn't.

Damn.

GPL 1.1 and OpenGL - anyone get it working?

by Zoll » Mon, 12 Jul 1999 04:00:00

It works with my Erazor2 TNT card (640x480, at Monza 25+ fps near the pits
and 30 to 36 elsewhere.
I use theese settings in core.ini:
[ OpenGL ]
TossHighestMip = 1                       ;
MipFiltering = 4                        ;
MirrorsEvery = 8                        ;

setting the "TossHighestMip"-value to "0" GPL crashes loading a track.

No problems here with 1.1 and CL GB TNT card. Check that you have not
accidentally enabled software rendering, and if the problems are only when
online, change these settings in the new core.ini:

clock_adj_delay=16;
and
synch_method = 0;

Good luck,
Keith.

Do you have the unified drivers installed?  I had to remove them in
order to get gpl to work.  I have cl tnt (agp) with their 2.04 beta
drivers.  Run at 640X480 with 37-38 at monza, except in the pits where
its in the 20's.  the 1.1 patch increased my fps about 2.  My system is
a p2-233, 64mb ram, soundblaster64pci card.  Also might try a clean
install of your video drivers including removing the old settings from
the registry.  cl has a faq site that will tell you how to do this.
hope this helps.

Works just fine for me, although I have a Hercules TNT2Ultra.

[ OpenGL ]
TossHighestMip = 1                       ;
MipFiltering = 2                        ; (sorry, looks like ***otherwise)
MirrorsEvery = 1                        ;

[ Communications ]
clock_adj_delay=12;
synch_method = 0;

Running latest Hercules drivers which are based on latest NVidia reference
drivers.

GPL 1.1 and OpenGL - anyone get it working?

by WiNoJo » Tue, 13 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Finally got it running OK, here's what I did (and note
that this may just be a system problem on my end, not a
problem with GPL or the patches) -

System is 400mzh PII dell, 128megs, cl tnt1 video w/2.04 drivers,
Logitech FF USB wheel and pedals.

Deleted GPL, reinstalled 1.0, openGL patch, 1.1 patch.  Still no
go,
FPS still in 3~6 range, suspected video driver problems
especially
after reading some posts on usenet.

Deleted GPL, reinstalled 1.0, installed 1.1 patch, then the
openGL patch.
TADA!  The problem was fixed!  However after renaming the opengl
CORE.INI
file to something else, and changing the CORE.INI.SAMPLE to
CORE.INI, the
problem returned.  And it would not go away even after restoring
both
CORE.INI's to the way I had them when it worked!  Strange, I
thought, so I
rebooted, and what do you know - the damn game starting working
properly
again.

It seems with using the openGL patch, any CORE.INI changes won't
take effect
until after a computer reboot?  Here is the CORE.INI I am
currently using,
don't know online racing will work with these settings:

[ Int Profile Values ]
value0 = OpenGL:TossHighestMip:0         ; do not change
value1 = OpenGL:MipFiltering:0                ; do not change
value2 = OpenGL:MirrorsEvery:0                ; do not change

[ OpenGL ]
TossHighestMip = 0                       ;
MipFiltering = 4                        ;
MirrorsEvery = 8                        ;

[ Hack ]
steer_ratio = 1                             ; Enable low speed
ratio override

[ Joy ]
allow_force_feedback = 1                 ; Use FF if device has
it
force_feedback_damping = 40.000000       ; force feedback damping
coefficient
force_feedback_latency = 0.085000        ; force feedback latency
(secs)
max_steering_torque = 225.000000         ; steering torque in
N*in giving max device force

[ Rasterizer ]
fullScreen = 1                           ; run Full Screen?

Notice I also had to change "MirrorsEvery" to 8 to get a
reasonable framerate using
the incar view.  That kind of sucks, but everything else looks
good and my framerates
probably range from 25~36 now (incar, outcar=36).  I really wish
Papy would fix the
game to allow for openGL now.  Alot of folks don't use Glide and
3dfx anymore.

Anyway, thanks for to the people who tried to help me on this.

PS - No Crocco, I'm not using the CL unified drivers.  I was
going to download and
install them, but I saw on the web site that GPL failed with them
anyway...

Nevermind, had the same problem right after I posted
this  :-/

Rebooting made it go away.  At least I know what to do
next time.  Not sure what the problem is, USB drivers
or something, I guess.

Computers - more fun than a barrel of monkeys   :*)
