Not if you care about anything other than Papy sims.  The
Rendition-based cards are awesome for Papyrus sims but pretty lousy for
most other things.  At least compared to most other modern video cards.

This is a good question!

Some of us are unable to use a 3Dfx card - myself, for example, uses a
laptop which can support D3D, of course I can't stick a Voodoo2 in
here

I can only run GPL here in software rendering, which looks so very
tacky and so remarkably bad that I don't even have GPL installed at
the moment, because it's a insult to GPL when you compare it to the
sheer realism of it running on a good computer with a powerful 3Dfx
card, like the Voodoo2 or Voodoo3.

I hope that we'll soon find out what sort of things we can expect to
see in the 1.1 patch, and just how much of a difference will it make
to GPL as it is at the moment?

Hmmm...

If you only care about Papy sims, do go for the rendition.  Ex:

Matrox G200 8MB
8.4 GB IBM Hard disk
64MB PC100 RAM
Around 25-30 fps in GPL with about 5 cars. (640X480)

Diamond Stealth II S220 4MB (only $30!!)
6.4 GB WD Hard disk
64MB PC100 RAM
35+ FPS in GPL with all cars at any track in 640X480 (15" monitor)

I can guarantee you that the extra 16 MHz or L2 Cache isn't what's making
those framerate increases :)

Can anyone comment on whether GPL 1.1 will provide more support for non-
3dfx video cards?  I currently run the opengl patch on my TNT card, and
while it's great for most games, it's only OK for GPL. I'm looking to
upgrade... but which way to go?  voodoo3 or TNT2?

Don't! A Banshee or V3 will run GPL smooth at 36 fps with 19 AI opponents
(on a fast PC) in 1024x768, no current Rendition card will do that.

However, if you have anything slower than a PII 300, a 8 mb Thriller will
probably be the best for GPL as it is faster on slower systems than the 3dfx
cards when running at 800x600 or lower.

Hello.

A fast TNT2 whit 32megs memory is cost a _lot_ more then the V3, and still
not sure that its going to be faster...
V3 2000 is running nice at 170Mhz, it is blazing fast, 2d is Perfect MAtrox
like quality, 3d quality is better then banshee or V2,
and it is god damn FAST !

I have no idea of the GPL 1.1 patch, but i think both card is good, but V3
2000 is the best buy today !

Check this:

Voodoo3 3000 (190Mhz)
128 megs ram
and gpl runs at 36fps whit 19 cars (1280x1024 !!!!) slows down only at start
of Monaco to 28fps :-)

well...:-)

Scott,

What problems are you experiencing exactly. I run a 16Mb TNT1 and it works
great at 1024 x 768.

Hello !

First of all, you must be useing low mirror refresh or outside view.
Second, if you have trinilear filtering set on, you cant see the road, and
its textures becouse of the 12 mipmap layers.. no good
If you set to anything else it looks BAD....so it looks horrible anyway, and
you have no mirrors working + i doubt that you have 36fps at starts...
maybe you have whit no cars on track, but as something is any near it drops
REAL bad !

I tried the rasterizer and followed the readme to the letter and when I
startup GPL the screens look light years better (brighter and crisper)
however when I try to start a practice session, my machine locks and I must
do a hard reboot.

I am anxious to get this working on my second system so I can have a
dedicated race server.
