GPL 1.1 - My results as if anyone cared

by Josmi Shva » Wed, 21 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Just to add to the discussion, here's MY results with the 1.1 patch:

Good:
1. Offline cars have much better AI. Much more fun to race
offline...apparently force feedback is good but I drive with joystick
so can't comment :(

Bad:
Racing online with VROC2 I run into the following problems. Not sure if
this is a problem with VROC or the patch...
1. On occasion (50% of the time) I'll double click on a race, the brown
Sierra splash screen appears and the computer freezes...hard...have to
reboot, reconnect, reload VROC2 and try again.
2. On some races (30% of the races) I'll get the oft reported
intermittent "slow motion" effect where I seem to speed up and slow
down. Makes it very hard to drive and hit brake points. This rarely
also happens on offline races as well.
3. On some races (30% of the races) I'll be in mid-race when I get some
kind of "network error" message and I get DISCONNECTED from my ISP. I
can continue driving for a while, then I get booted from GPL and have
to re-dial into my ISP. Very frustrating when I'm on my last lap of a
long race...grrrrr.
4. And one of the weirdest errors...I'll connect to a race, get ready
to start my practice runs and I'll attempt to navigate around the info
screen to see provisional grid, lap times etc. and GPL will
unceremoniously quit and dump me to the desktop.
5. See some bad warping, especially at the start, when cars will pop in
and out of view right in front of me.

My specs:
PII-233
64 MB RAM
V3 2000
USR 33.6 ISA modem
SB 64 Value
All latest drivers from respective websites.

GPL is still an awful lot of fun, and these problems won't make me quit
racing, but frustration level can get very high sometimes...my online
problems have made me play a lot more offline, it's less frustrating
but also less fun that driving against real people.

Still looking for that perfect sim in the sky...

I wish I could remember the name of that application..  Someone had
problems with getting disconnected, bad and no lap times, ect.. (he had
a 33.6 btw)  What he did was to adjust his MTU to 576 (i think that's
the number)  and there's another figure you can adjust with that app.
He adjusted that too.  End result....  he was able to race again :)

So, give that a try and see what happens.  Can't hurt

If your talking about a utility that adjusts your DUN settings to optimize
connections, I use a doohickey called PPP-Boost, available at...
www.c3sys.demon.co.uk
...and have enjoyed good connections online since.

That someone is a happy bunny again :-)

The Dun settings that Mike is refering to are MTU 576. TTL 255 RWIN 2144.

Mark :-)

I always thought that RWIN isn't used by UDP. And can someone explain
way a TTL of 255 does improve the connection of GPL?

It doesn't. In fact none of these parameters influence GPL's traffic, which
is UDP. Not even the MTU, as the largest message GPL will send is less than
400 bytes.

I can only assume that the original figure was set way below this threshold
then!

My statement is not entirely accurate. TTL can be of influence: it must be
at least equal to the number of hops between the client and the server for
packets to make it across.
