I don't type out messages till after the race has run.  That way I can
concentrate on having one of those good starts and not concentrate on
typing. ;-)

If it's not too late, it would be nice to put some of the most common
used chat messages on configurable hotkeys. Things like "Pit Out", "My
Mistake", "No Problem", "Sorry - Warp", "Good Luck", "Thanks" and
"Careful at Start and Turn1 Please". You would only need a small set -
but it's very hard to find time to type these in a race.
Cheers,

If you have a programmable joystick, you can map those text strings to a
few buttons or hats. Works great.

Or even better, use wave files for these standard messages. Then you
don't even have to read and you can fully concentrate on driving.

That's a great idea, but Papyrus should just provide the facility for
programming any message you choose.  I think a lot of drivers are
already doing this with some of the more configurable joysticks/wheels.

At least I can try (and fail) to ignore text messages, but verbal messages
could get in the way of tire squeal and such during a race.

Of course options to turn off voice chat would be welcome in this case.

Jason.

What?  Is voice-communication possible within GPL?
I've heard that there is a tool available to talk during internet
games.

Go to www.shadowfactor.com and download the Battle Comms beta. Its
free unlimited use for 30 days and $25 to register. The racing teams
can use a private channel of their own and the whole track would be on
a global channel. The race host wouldn't also host the BC server, but
another person in the race (or not) with a good connection to the net.
I have been using it for 6 months in all my online flight sims. Works
great, just need a decent headset ( I use the Andrea NC-65 ) and the
voice is darn near telephone quality.

i havent used battlefield comm ... so i dont know how good it is ... but i
have been using roger wilco from www.resounding.com ... and find that it
also works rather well ... you do have to tweak it to work with gpl ... but
they have good support on their site about doing it ... the app runs along
side you game and the sound comes out the speakers over the top of the game
sound .... for that you need a full duplex sound card but im sure just about
everyone here has one

worth a look anyway
