Hi all,

We must have gone over 40 laps green at the start. Brilliant fun :) Zugzug
and I had pulled away from the field before the first yellow then I stuffed
the pit stop. On the restart I got behind a car with the worst online warp
I've ever seen. I tried to get by but the thing leapt 12 feet in one frame
and got me. Didn't know how bad the damage was so I carried on the
warp-demon bit me twice more.

No recriminations but I wonder if those apparently warping to others can
detect this themselves? I've only been on NR2002 a little while and always
with ADSL so I've not much to judge it against. Is it something a minimum
latency setting could overcome or are the two not necessarily related.
Although it wrecked my race (and a fair few others I suspect), I'm not too
aggrieved but I do wonder if there's anyway to control such ectremes.

I think if you see one or two other cars warping, it's probably their
connection. If you see most other cars warping, it's probably your
connection.

There may be the odd case that two drivers with not so good connections only
see each other warp while all others are ok for them, and see them as being
ok as well, simply because their added lag is big, while their individual
lag added up with the lag of one of the guys with a better connection is
still good enough to avoid major warping...

<snip>

It was great racing for the first 40+ laps, then someone warped into me and
we brought the first yellow. The damage I sustained made my car's rear jump
out at the same spot on the track and I brought out 2 more yellows in self
spins.....I parked it ;-)
But there a few cars that were warping quite abit, made you quite nervous
when you got close to them.
I had a great battle with DGF for many, many laps until aliens beamed him up
and he was gone :-(
Still a great race though!

I am convinced that Dave's problem with freezes is being caused by Network
Lag in his Internet Connection.

Either his Cable Company, or his home network, router, or something.

Maybe a lousy LAN card.

Two different things happened today. Eldred's server seemed to be acting up
a bit. I don't think I'm the only one who got zapped and sent back a lap.
Not 100% positive though. I've only had a connection problem with his server
twice in what, 25 races? I've only been disco'd in maybe two pickup races at
sirerra.com. My connection is almost always one of the strongest on whatever
server I'm on.When I got zapped today, the latency meter shot into the red
and then I was sent to the back of the field and a lap down. I'm not
concerned at all about the connection issue today. That's going to happen
occasionally. I've probably got it better than 99.99% of people who race
online. The freezes are alltogether different though.

Recently I was thinking they they were being caused by my internet
connection, but apparently I was wrong. They seemed to be only happening
online in the past couple of months, but I had a freeze while racing the AI
earlier this week while practicing for Texas. Same thing as online, a three
second freeze. That rules out my internet connection, and brings me back to
the beginning when I was getting the freezes both offline and online. I
decided again this week that it might be sound card related so I went out
this morning and spent more money (up to about $275 for N2002 now) on a
Hercules Fortissimo 2. I had four freezes during the race, the first three
during yellows (when they usually occur) and the last when passing Brian
(who else?) on lap 66. I just steered off into the infield and rammed the
pace car to make sure I stopped cold.

Jan and I were chatting during the race and we were thinking it may be
faulty video ram on my video card (GF2 Ti). Is there any utility to check
something like this? Getting a little tired of spending $$. WRL is going to
seem cheap in comparison.

David G Fisher

P.S. Maybe it's Brian Farmer who's causing the freezes. It's always HIM I'm
near when they happen. He was sending me private chat messages begging me to
ease up before I began to pass him. He said I was upsetting his tummy. He's
doing SOMETHING to me, I just don't know what. :-)

Yeah, one of the best races to date. Good return to form after last week's
debacle as well. And I was the first retirement... ;-(

Really grating, but the way it happened was rather cool. I lost power as I
exited turn 2, which sent me wide and into the wall. Then got into a big
"tankslapper" as the poor throttle response hampered my recovery. Engine cut
out completely at the entry to T3.

One question: had I called for a tow instead of escaping out would I have
been listed as mechanical retirement rather than an "accident"?

Was a good race to view though. Some really good racing, especially Brian
and Larry providing a lot of entertainment. Well driven guys.

If I were to criticize (and I am... <g>) I'd say Uwe and Joon-Li made things
harder than they should have been considering the circumstances on a couple
of occasions, but nothing really unsporting, IMO.

Anyhow... looking forward to next week.

Jan.

Ya, it was a very good race.  Awsome pit strategy by the winner (the
name escapes me at the moment).  The most laps I have ever gotten out
of a run is 67 and that is really working hard to manage fuel.  I
believe the winner got 70 laps (by my count) out of a run.  I was
expecting everyone was going to have to pit so I took 4 tires and was
very conservative getting in and out of the pits.  In retrospect I
should have taken 2 tires and really gotten aggressive on pit
entry/exit... a couple of extra seconds would have got me the win.

Some very long green runs with just enough cautions to make it
interesting.  Neil had problems on pit road like he said and 43
Simmons I believe got a BF/stop-n-go for passing me and then entering
pit road under caution, which kinda took them out of contention.  98
Larry was also running very good but on restarts I believe he was
mixing it up with lap cars which allowed me to pull away.  It was
definetly going to be anyones race.  If you look at the practice
times, I believe almost everyone was within 3 or 4 tenths of each
other.  Congrats again to the winner.

45 laps

Actually, Joon actively blocked me in order to keep me "between him and
2nd place (who was not near close enough to catch him before the end of
the race).  I  actually rear-ended him as we exited turn 2 with one lap
to go because he was trying to run the low line.  I was clearly faster
and was beginning to make the pass on him (I was 3 laps down in 8th
place), yet he insisted on blocking me.  He almost got spun out for his
trouble.

This goes to prove that blocking in ANY way is NOT a good idea when
you're racing online.  Joon's connection was pretty flakey too, and if
he had warped when I was trying to pass him, he'd have wrecked us both.
He had been told about his connection a couple of times during the race.

I thought it was un-sporting, and dangerous besides.

I still think if that was the problem it would be nothing more than a
warping issue (since thats what warping is).

One thing I have noticed is that after I have been playing a long time
my screen takes a LONG time to transition between screens.  For
example when I hit the drive button to get in the car, I will hear
"gentlemen start your engines" and then my car starting up, and my
screen will just be black and then finally my car shows up.  Or if I
click replay, the screen will be black for several seconds before the
replay start, but I can hear the replay running.  BUT, this only
happens after playing for several hours, which kinda seems to indicate
some sort of memory leak (can you have a video ram leak???).  I never
had this problem under Win98 but have noticed it ever since moving to
XP.  I think I might run performance monitor the next time and see if
I can narrow it down any more.  Any way, I wonder if this could have
anything to do with his freeze problems.

Dave, you might try running performance monitor as well, maybe it will
reveal something.  Try monitoring different memory counters such as
pages/sec which would indicate swap file usage.

Do you run any other games that use OpenGL or Direct3D?  Do you have
any kind of problems with them?

This may be extreme, but if it was me and I had access to another hard
drive, I might try puting it in and doing a clean install of the OS,
drivers, etc. and N2002 and see if I still have problems.  I might
even try installing a different OS such as Win 98.

It was a good clean race for the most part.
The first yellow was my fault. I got an itch I just had to scratch. I came
out of turn two wrong and got into a tank slapper and head-on into the
outside wall. I was off pace after that. Sorry guys. The other yellows were
caused by a warping car.
From where I was one car was warping across track making it hard to pass. I
tried and 2-3 others tried and smartly backed off.
I hope the rest of the races can be like this one.

Dan, sorry 'bout spinnin' you.   I had slowed w/ you when JS was coming off the
wall, but didn't leave enough distance when you hit the brakes (tho on my screen
I just missed you & had no damage, but you moved like I hit you)...  my bad

I stayed on the apron so you could get back by me, even tho we were "racing back
to the yellow", when another car came by me & put you in the wall on the
backstretch.  He *was* racing back to the yellow, & wouldn't have hit you if I
hadn't spun you in the first place.  My fault, & I apologize again.
