I've only played a sample copy of the Xbox version and I was very impressed
with the driving model.  The different 'feel' of the various driving
surfaces is what really stood out.  The game has a proper suspension model,
the car's momentum feels spot on and most importantly the grip levels,
braking distances and slip curves for various road surfaces are supremely
accurate.  If you run wide on most tracks into the long grass it actually
gets very bumpy as you'd expect from a real-life track and because of the
realistic suspension model, the car can start bouncing in a very ***
fashion. =)  Fantastic.

Hit a ditch at a bad angle and the car flips in a very pleasing and
realistic way.  This brings the damage model into play which is one of, if
not, THE best I've seen.

I'm actually amazed that they released a game like this on consoles (PC
version is coming in September)  I can say with great confidence that it
will be a massive flop on PS2 and Xbox.  The game has a very serious 'tone'
and it doesn't look anywhere near as flashy as the likes of Rallisport
Challenge 2 or CMR'04 and most kiddies will find the difficulty completely
off-putting.  It's already receiving luke-warm reviews from console
reviewers and the common theme is that it's 'too difficult' to drive and not
'fun' enough.  hehe....lamers...<g>

I may have only played the Xbox version but I've seen enough to know the PC
version will be a rally simmer's delight and the physics model is
comfortably better than the likes of Rally Tropy, Michelin Rally Masters
etc.  Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to check out things like garage
options - I spent most of the time admiring the physics model but I hear
that they're quite good.  Roll on September! =)

Nice to know it's not just me.....here's a quote I found from a guy over at
the RSC forums...

"...what I do know though is that, based on the PS2 demo that I've been
playing, RBR will be all your rally sim dreams come true. FWIW, I've been
driving sims ever since GPL was released and this is the first time since
Gpl that I have found one so incredibly demanding - flying down that bumpy
dirt track puts the fear of God into you

And that's just the PS2 version

I can't sleep nights waiting for this one"

It is particulary difficult and will flop on the consoles, because you
cannot control the car with any accuracy using a hand held controller.
A good wheel setup with realistc FF is needed otherwise it really isn't
any fun!

The amount of people who have that is minimal.  Respect to the
publishers/developers for releasing the game though.

Well, I just completed the rally school (while I should have been working
<g>) using the xbox controller.  Was it challenging?  Yes.  Was it nearly
impossible?  Definitely not.  Was it fun and rewarding?  OMFG, yes!  To be
honest, I'd say there's lots of races/challenges in the Project Gotham
series which are far more difficult and frustrating.

Damn, looks like I'll be buying the Xbox AND PC versions cos I haven't got
the will power to let this sit on the store shelf while I wait for the PC
version. =)

I've just taken a peek inside the garage and I'm blown away.  Fully
adjustable differential mapping!  36 different settings just for each diff
(12 each for throttle, brake in 10% ranges and 12 for different speed ranges
from 0 to 200km/h)  All are adjustable in 1% increments.  Front, Rear and
Centre diffs + a setting for Centre L Foot diff.  There are torque settings
for each diff too & diff threshold for left foot brake and handbrake.

For suspension, roll bars etc, there are roughly twice as many things as you
can adjust in GTR.......OMG.

Geometry - top mount position...steering rod length....strut platform
height...axis inclination.....castor...camber etc etc etc

Can't believe I'm seeing all this on a console...

I keep smacking the radiator and getting to hear all the coolant
hissing itself into the ether for the next mile or so.

says...

Cockpit is the default view and is the easiest to drive from.  There is
no online code as such, although I think you can upload times to a
central scoreboard.

The***pit view is raised so you can't really see the wheel and it's in the
centre of the car so the so-called purists won't like that.  AFAICT, the PC
version will have a more traditional***pit view.

Online code is irrelevant as this is a rally sim not a rallicross sim.

Yep.  The graphics didn't really grab me at first but after seeing more of
the stages I can honestly say that this is the most realistic terrain ever
seen in a video game.  The colours are all so natural which is why the
graphics don't immediately jump out at you.

Well there could have been online code. Would be a bit boring to sit for
ages waiting for you turn tho. If you were lucky the guy in front of you had
a problem and you got the chance of seing another car on the track. Only for
*** simmers! :)

Sounds promising this title. A little to good to be true. Is there really no
arcade mode to please the masses/kids? We need titles like this to sell real
well.

I like realistic physics, but the difficulty of Rally Trophy was too much
for me . Not the physics, but having to place in the top to unlock the next
tracks.  The competition was brutal.  I just wish they'd give more play
options for difficulty in these games.

Even though it is not realistic, it is also fun to have an online
component with racing on tracks

Most detailed garage in a sim ever.  You can adjust all the standard
crap, plus front/center/rear diff maps with different locking
percentages depending on how much throttle you're using, adjustable
suspension geometry, etc.

Glad to hear that it drives well, that was my one big worry about the
game  Features, etc, all look amazing but if it doesn't drive well
it's all moot.

Damien,

Any place a guy here in the States can order RBR?

I don't think there's a planned release for RBR, XBox, in the US.  Too bad,
and I really don't want to wait until September for the PC version.

But then... we have NCAA 2005, Madden 2005, and ESPN NFL 2005 soon to be
released.

Where's the time?

But I'd like a good Rally game.  :)

The only good multiplayer rally is simply a competition where everybody
enters (1 to 16 slot per example) and starts at the same time.  You do not
see others on screen, except perhaps on-screen data that shows how far you
are in time compared to the one that is the fastest of the group.  That way
you can know in real-time if you're slow or not and you don't have to wait
for your turn.
