Need driver for Microsoft non FF wheel/pedals

I just got a new USB Microsoft Precesion Racing wheel but something is wrong
with the driver CD.  I have searched Microsoft website but the only driver I
can find is a gameport version for Win95/98 and I have XP USB.  Can somebody
point me to the proper driver?  Thanks.

This is the best I could come up with:

http://www.microsoft.com/products/hardware/sidewinder/devices/PreWhee...

Are you sure the drivers are different for XP?  Nothing I see mentions a need for
specific drivers.  All i can see (like you) are references to 98 drivers.  Maybe give
them a try.

jeff

Thanks.  However when I downloaded the driver from there, I got an "This
version is not compatible with your version of Windows".

I can't believe Microsoft doesn't have the latest driver on their site!  At
this time, I can play GTR2002 with single axis, but GPL doesn't recognize
the steering wheel.  The proper drivers must be somewhere.  I guess I'll
have to try to contact Microsoft to get a new CD, or else I could take the
whole thing back where my wife got it and excange the whole thing.  Wrong
time of year for that!

I have stood back and read this thread from afar but it is beyond a joke
now...

You have(or your wife) purchased a product that is not complete,it is not
fit for the purpose it was purchased for and it is not of ant use to you
whatsoever.

Now if you have a receipt it will be either refunded or replaced/exchanged
for a new one, which this time you can open in the store and check that all
the contenets are there.

Why on earth anyone would buy something and spend the next 3 days on forums
and searching websites for something that should and normally is in the
package i will never know.

Your actions are those of someone who has stolen the wheel and didnt
remember to nick the CD whilst you were on the premises/at the scene of the
crime.

This i doubt.,i think it is a puchased item with receipt.

So stop this whole charade/farce and return it for a new one and check the
contents in store in front of the sales staff.

Happy New Year...;)

I assume you're joking about the thieving part.  Very funny.  As far as
taking the thing back, that is easier said than done, unless you like
fighting city traffic and waiting in line for hours (this is Christmas,
remember?)  The other thing is I doubt getting a new one would make any
difference.  Why would it?  It is hard for me to believe there is anything
wrong with the CD as it looks perfect, is read fine by Windows Explorer, and
copies to the C: drive fine.  So I go to all the trouble to take it back and
have the same trouble.  *THATS* why I have been looking for help here.  It
is A LOT easier, and in the mean time I can still race GTR2002 which of
course I just got and cannot get enough of.  (My wife now very much regrets
getting me that wheel, by the way.)

Thanks for your help.

Sorry for the huge quote but I wanted to preserve this awesome tech
support in all of its glory.

To Tony, you need to install Sidewinder software version 4.0 in order
to get all of the functions of the wheel to work in Windows XP.  Even
without the software installed Windows XP will install the driver for
the wheel, however, without the software you cannot access the axis,
macro, sensitivity, and deadzone configuration.  If the hardware is
working ok, even before installing any software, you should see the
wheel listed in "Game Controllers" in the Control Panel and you should
be able to use the wheel in single-axis mode.  To use dual axis, you
need to have the SW4 software.

When you install the Sidewinder 4.0 Software it will say "not
compatible with this version of windows" but it's wrong. =)  Ignore
the error and finish the installation.  You should end up with a green
and red icon in your system tray which is called "Sidewinder Game
Controller Software 4.0".

Thanks Jason, I finally did get the 4.0 software to install.  The problem
turned out to be my DVD drive.  A different one fixed it.  Weird.  Anyway, I
checked the "split-axis" box but GPL will not recognize the pedals being
split.  Also, now the brake pedal in GTR2002 goes from off to full on with
only the slightest movement in the pedal.  Also, now when I try to use the
wheels paddle shifters, I get a message in GTR2002 that says they are
"reserved".

You cannot download it.

It uses the 4.0 software.

And, to make matters worse, there are SEVERAL versions of the 4.0 driver.
Each device has a customized version of the 4.0 driver, and not just any 4.0
CD will do.

It has to be a 4.0 driver CD for that device.

You should call Microsoft and get a replacement.
