I want to start racing again and I need a new steering wheel for GPL and
N2002.  I don't really like the looks of the MS wheel, but the lack of a
steering pot is attractive.  Do the pedals still use pots?  I have
re-built my old ThrustMaster Nascar Pro for the last time.  Is the MS
non FF wheel OK for the money?  Thanks.

I dont know much about the technical side of things, so I dont know
about the pots in the pedals. I can tell you that I've had my non-ff MS
wheel for about 2 years and have loved every lap I have taken.

I know for a fact that the pedals use pots since I've broken them
before and opened it up.  I heard the steering wheel uses optical
sensors but I'm not sure since I've never opened up the wheel.

Hi Tony,

Buy,com has the new Logitech Momo wheel for $90 plus shipping but it is
remanufactured. It comes with a 90 day warranty. I think the total comes to
$108. They also have the new one for $158 and you can go to
www.bensbargains.net and get a $15 off $150 coupon to bring the price down
to $133. I have the ms ff wheel and it is a good wheel. I just want a new
one too. I will probably buy the new version of the logitech momo wheel. The
ms wheel is usually on sale often. I got my ff one for about $75.

This is conflicting, considering the pedals are of never-calibrate design,
and the output has 64 discreet steps.

I guess there could be some electronics somewhere that is taking in and
massaging the pedal input before it gets to the system.

I have a MSFFW at my office and could not resist taking it appart.
There are two 20k pots inside it.
It's wired like this (on the RJ connector):

1    Ground
2    Power
3    Brake pot wiper
4    Gas pot wiper

Now Larry, why don't you go ahead and interface them to your Momo? :)

Sounds doable :)

It would be a lot easier if Logitech didn't bring everything into the pedal
base, though :)

Steve,

You bring up the one thing that really turned me off of the Non-FF MS Wheel.
That damned center notch.  It is quite defined, isn't it :)

Do you know if all the electronics like USB interface and stuff are inside
the pedal base?
I've read that the power is connected to the pedal base, but is the USB
cable also connected to the base?

Yeah....the connection between my msff pedals and wheel was severed around
christmas (it was the gameport version so the pedals had the special plug in
to the wheel, unlike the current phone cord idea), and I replaced the
package with the non FF version.  It went back a day later because the of
the "center notch" and because I didn't like the feel of the wheel as much
as the FF version.  Actually my FF version just came in today, and I'm
anxious to get back to racing :)

If you can go to a local store with one on display, you can feel the notch
at the center when you turn the wheel.  If you decide to get the force
feedback version, there's a $30 US coupon at microsoft's website (good until
October).  It's also redeemable in Canada as well...

I haven't taken it apart yet, and probably won't because I want to sell it.
