Split axis in MS non FF wheel/pedals

I love my wife.  When she saw how frustrated I was trying to race GTR2002
with the keyboard (my new system will not recognize my aging TM Nascar Pro)
she let me open my Christmas present early.  A new MicroSoft USB non FF
steering wheel, which I always thought looked kind of cheesy, but actually I
like it a lot.  However, for some reason the driver CD will not load on my
new XP system.  The good news is it is recognized and works in GTR2002, but
how can I get split-axis?  Thanks.

You can't change to split-axis unless you install the Sidewinder
software.  You should be able to install even if it says it's not
certified.

Explain why the CD wont load on your pc...

All of the MS wheel cd's say they are not certified, but you load them
anyway.

Later..

I can't remember the exact error message but it isn't a signing issue.  When
I click on the "install driver" button after loading the CD, I get the error
msg and never have the opportunity to load the driver.  When I get home,
I'll try it again and write down the error msg.  Thanks.

OK, after inserting the CD, I get a box with the option to "Install
SideWinder Precision Racing Wheel Software".  Clicking on that option, I get
an error box that says: "setup is unable to find installation languages in
D:\SETUP\SETUP.LID file."  "Error 105"  Looking at the CD in Explorer the
SETUP.LID file is there.  Help!

Tony,

I have the same wheel and it loaded just fine on my Gateway PC with
WinXP.  Make sure that the installation CD for the MS wheel is clean.
Sometimes smudges or fingerprints on the CD will prevent it from reading
correctly.  As karkrazy said, the Sidewinder software will allow you to set
up split axis.  I double checked the MS site for the wheel, and it said that
the Sidewinder is "certified" compatible with WinXP, no updates necessary,
so it should work.

I looked at the disk, it looks fine.  I washed it anyway but it didn't make
any difference.  Bummer...

Some things you can try:

1.  Delete any file named "setup.exe" in C:\Documents and
Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp and C:\windows\temp.

2.  Copy the contents of the CD to a temp directory and run it from
the hard drive.

That did it!  However, I now get another warning: "Setup has determined you
are running Windows 2000, Sidewinder software was designed for Windows 98
and may not work right on W2K".  Actually I'm running XP Home Edition.
Should I install the software anyway?  Thanks.

Yup, go ahead and install it.

This is crazy.  Now when I try to repeat the same thing that worked before,
now it doesn't!  I get the same error as before.  I tried deleting the files
on C:\ and recopying them from the CD, but no good.  I hate computers.

Apparently, this is a widespread problem.  The driver CD will not work
normally if using Windows XP and Microsoft has not fixed this yet.  I
finally found the solution by doing a Google newsgroup search.  If anyone
cares, the answer is at:

Nothing to fix.  Version 4 software works fine, except it gives a warning it
cannot install on Windows 2000.  Ignore that, and install.

Exactly.  I'm using 2 sidewinder pros on my XP machine and they both
function flawlessly as long as Sidewinder Version 4.0 Software is
installed and the system tray icon is running.

The only difference in functionality that I've found between 95/98 and
2000/XP as far as this wheel is concerned is that the system tray icon
must be running for custom settings to work.  In 95/98 you could
disable it and free up some resources.

Sadly, on my clean install of WinXP, with or without SP1 installed,
the installer reports that it could not install the uninstaller
support and then it crashes dead in module _ins5576._mp. That's given
that I do the compatibility change to Setup properties first (which I
shouldnt have to do anyway).

The version on my CD, v4, seems more up to date than the version on
their website which is 3.02. Crazy situation when their own drivers
won't work on their operating system.

Why couldnt buttong mapping and split axis have been built into XP?
