Help needed to setup FF in GPL with a Microsoft Sidewinder FF joystick.

Could any kind soul give me any advice or point me in the right
direction in setting up Force Feedback correctly with my MSFF joystick
in GPL please?

I have enabled FF in the core.ini file but have found it very
difficult to setup. Is anyone else out there using one of these
sticks? If so could you give me an idea of what settings you are
using. It would be very much appreciated as I have heard how good the
FF is in GPL.

Thanks for any assistance.

Just last week I switched to the MSFF wheel (becoming really ***ed, i am
afraid...) but my old MSFF joystick was quite usable with settings in the
range:

max torque: 180 to 300
damping    :  5 to 50
latency      :  0.0025 to 0.01 (athlon 1GHz, should it matter)

(suggestion: start with max torque=300, damping=5, very low latency, then
decrease max torque, then adjust damping to your liking, then adjust
latency)

You will find that low damping values give you a better feeling when front
tires lose grip, at the expense of the effects you would expect when driving
over grass or curbs.  With a stick, IMHO the main benefits of FF are the
wheel (sorry, stick) centering effect (easier to drive in the long
straights) and the advance warning you get as the front tires lose grip.

You might also search http://www.racesimcentral.net/ for settings for the MSFF
wheel, as these are not so different, IMO (I basically increased the max
torque level when switching from stick to wheel).  In particular, I found
the post by Chris "Ambulater" Lee quite helpful (even for FF sticks users).
Sorry, didn't save that post (doh!) but google is your friend here.

Have fun,
Xavier.
