Having purchased the same wheel last Tuesday, I had the same problem, but a
gracious soul explained how to fix it. In a nutshell, you have to use one
of the profiles included with the MS software. Basically, go to the MS
control panel, and click on the "activator" in the bottom left corner, then
load the nascar 2 profile, thus creating a new profile. The nascar 2
profile is set up the same as N3 and Nascar Legends. Make sure you check
off your Nascar 2 profile, then exit the profile/ control panel program.
Once this is done, you can go into N3 and Nascar Legends, and run them with
the paddles for you shift up, shift down.
One final thing to remember is that you must uncheck your N2 profile before
you run GPL or your controller will be screwed up.....
Hope this helps....

I haven't noticed any problem with a drop in frame rate on my under-powered
P233mmx except in DTR where it is actually more or less undriveable with 10
ai cars with FF enabled :O((. I was a little surprised at that as DTR runs
very smoothly without FF, I thought my problems might be with N3, NL and
GPL.
I have one quick query (at the moment...) regarding Nascar 3... it doesn't
seem to recognise the buttons on the back of the wheel, only those on the
front... anybody else found this, and if so any solution for it. I much
prefer the paddle buttons for shifting. On that point my only disapointment
so far is that I feel MS made a mistake by not including a stick shfter on
this unit, I have got used to the one on my Thrustmaster F1 and it does give
a more authentic feel when driving N3. NL, TOCA2, GPL, SCGT. Still, that's
just a minor gripe at the moment.
Appreciate any feedback anyone can give...

Yes..at that point you will likely want to check the GPL profile you created
using separate axes for throttle and brake.
