NR2003 computer problem

by Tanstaaf » Sat, 25 Jan 2003 16:38:43

I've come up with a very strange problem on one of 3 machines I have on a
home network.  I installed the NR2003 demo on 2 of the machines which are
relatively equal in capability.  All was fine and with mostly medium
graphics settings I get 50 to 100 fps in 800x600 16 bit depending on the
situation on the track.  All 3 computers run DirectX 8.1.  Below are the
specs for those 2 computers that work fine:

 Computer #1:
      Operating System                                  Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
    Motherboard:
      CPU Type                                          Intel Celeron-S,
1300 MHz (13 x 100)
Motherboard Name                                  Soyo TISU  (6 PCI, 1
AGP, 1 CNR, 3 DIMM, Audio)
      Motherboard Chipset                               Intel Solano i815EP
      System Memory                                     512 MB  (SDRAM)
      BIOS Type                                         Award Modular
(04/27/01)

    Display:
      Video Adapter                                     NVIDIA GeForce2
MX/MX 400  (64 MB)
    Multimedia:
      Audio Adapter                                     Diamond Monster
Sound MX300 Sound Card

Computer #2:
      Operating System                                  Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
      Motherboard:
      CPU Type                                          AMD Athlon-PECM,
1366 MHz (6.5 x 210)
      Motherboard Name                                  Abit
KT7(A)/KT7(A)-RAID/KT7E  (1 ISA, 6 PCI, 1 AGP, 3 DIMM)
      Motherboard Chipset                               VIA VT8363(A) Apollo
KT133(A)
      System Memory                                     512 MB  (SDRAM)
      BIOS Type                                         Award Modular
(12/15/00)
      Display:
      Video Adapter                                     NVIDIA GeForce2
MX/MX 400  (32 MB)
      Multimedia:
Audio Adapter                                     Creative Labs SB 16
Audio Adapter

Then I installed the demo on the 3rd computer which is much more capable
than the other 2 and is significantly faster on every other application or
game I've encountered.  On the 3rd computer with the same graphic settings
as the other 2, I get at most 20 fps and the sound on the menu screens is
corrupted.  The in game engine sound is relatively normal, but at 20 fps I
haven't messed with it much.

I thought maybe something about the sound card was bogging it down so I
disabled sound in the demo and in Windows.  No help.  I tried several
varieties of Nvidia drivers including 40.72 and 41.09.  No difference.
Sound card drivers are the latest I could find.  All other games I've tried
on this machine including UT2003 and F1 2002 run great.

Now it gets even weirder.  Out of curiosity I launch NR2002 which has always
run great on that machine.  Now it too is bogged down to 20 fps.  It doesn't
matter if I use DirectX or OpenGL.  As a last resort I installed DirectX 9.
No difference.  Below are the specs for the 3rd machine:

Computer:
      Operating System                                  Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
      Motherboard:
CPU Type                                          AMD Athlon XP, 1466
MHz (5.5 x 266) 1700+
      Motherboard Name                                  ECS K7S5A  (5 PCI, 1
AGP, 1 AMR, 4 DIMM, Audio)
      Motherboard Chipset                               SiS 735
System Memory                                     512 MB  (PC2100 DDR
SDRAM)
      BIOS Type                                         AMI (12/15/01)
      Display:
      Video Adapter                                     NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti
200  (64 MB)
      Multimedia:
      Audio Adapter                                     Creative Labs SB
Live! 5.1 Sound Card

Any advice you can give is much appreciated.

Well that is odd.  About all I can 'guess' is you have some sort of
resource conflict.  Check to make sure the videocard is NOT sharing an IRQ
with anyother device. (same for the soundcard)
There is a conflict with nvidia drivers that pre-date the 40+ level.(for
example going from the 30.82's to the 41.09's)  You should be able to find
a utility that deletes the extra files at most driver sites.  Also try
using a program like detonator destroyer to find more un-used nvidia
files(after uninstalling the drivers and choosing a standard pci vga
display adapter.  Make sure to follow the uninstall and reinstall
instructions closely.  Good luck.

I Dont know if this will help or not but I had to install the newest 4 -1
drivers on my machine for it to work I dont know why even the previous set
of drivers would not run it just the newest but I have got a via chip so
thats why i dont know if it will help you or not,.
