NR2003 Demo Problems

by bertr » Wed, 22 Jan 2003 11:29:28

When trying to run the demo for the first time, my system hangs during
the graphics tests.  I'm using the Default settings - DirectX 8.1;
Radeon 8500LE; 800x600 16-bit.  I tried changing this to OpenGL, and the
same thing happens.

Could it be that DX 9 is required after all?  (If so, I wonder why it
wasn't included in the demo file....)  Based on the discussion in a
previous thread, many thought that running it on DX8.1 would not be a
problem.  I hesitate "upgrading" to DX 9 just for this demo.

My system is an AthlonXP1700; 512 megs Ram; Radeon 8500LE; Win 98SE;
DirectX 8.1.

Has anyone with a similar system had success in running this demo?

Thanks!
Bert

I'm still using DX 8.1, Ti4200, 30.82 drivers, and the demo runs just
fine.  I, too, was worried that DX9 would be mandatory, but apparently
not.

Pardon me Bert;  BUT - what did the last pop-up message when you installed
the demo, read???

Thats right!  Right infront of your nose - it said  DX 9.0 REQUIRED!  It
even had a link to M$' DX-site for crying out LOUD!

I have dx 8.1 and it ran just fine.  I think it is supposed to work
BETTER with dx9 but it should still run with dx8.1.  However I have a GF
not an ATI Radeon.

No problems here running the demo with DX 8.1.  I decided against
installing DX 9 unless absolutely necessary since it caused probs in
F1 2002 for me.  Eric Busch mentioned in an earlier post that N2003
actually only uses 8.1, but 9.0 would be included on the CD.

Thank you, Ed -- I saw that pop-up too.  After all, I'm not blind.

But, according to some of the earlier speculation on this, and judging from
some of the other responses to this one, apparently DX9 is not required on all
systems after all.

** End of MY rant **    8-)

So <ahem>, is anyone successfully running it on a Radeon 8500LE (or ANY Radeon
for that matter), Win 98SE and DX8.1?

Thanks!

I am Bert, DX 8.1 and the same card as you ATI 8500, but I am running XP,
don't know if that matters and the demo ran just fine.
If you want a more civilised response you know where to find me :-)

errrr...nevermind. works anyway. however....after a full 5 minutes of test at
tally..turned on speed instead of time...speedometer pegs at 184 but lap times
186.__. if your running 184 tops how can you average 186.+
Oh well

NR2003 Demo Problems

Thanks to all who responded.  I've solved the problem (at least
somewhat....)

The problem was that I had my RadeonLE overclocked to approx 290mhz.  As
soon as I lowered it to 275, the video calibration for DirectX (8.1)
worked.  Once calibrated, I was able to again overclock to 290 and run the
demo.

I haven't gotten the video calibration to work with OpenGL, though.  Come to
think of it, the default Mhz for this card is 250, not 275, so I guess that
I'll try that tomorrow as it's already getting late.

FWIW, with DX8.1 and all graphic defaults, framerates were decent -- around
100 during testing session (Talledega) and around 55-60 during a race (with
the default 11 AI cars).  I would expect OpenGL to be faster, since that's
the case with NR2002 with my system.

Thanks again to everyone -- You too, Ed S.  8-)

Quite easily in fact.  Remember that in Nascar the track length is
measured at a fixed distance in from the outside wall (I think it's like
6 to 10 feet), but since you spend so much time low in the turns so you
end up driving less than the actual measured length.

And what happened when I totally ignored it's request to install M'soft
public beta of a Direct X release?   Nothing - it work 100% fine without
it - and ran at 40 - 70fps no problem.
