Odd; on my XP1800/Ti4400 box, Open GL was much better FPS-wise than D3D. I
gained about 30FPS sitting in the pits in testing mode without doing
anything but switching rasterizers in the 3D config, so that's what I used
from then on; D3D was in the ***S. But yes, even in OGL it'll still bring
your PC to it's knees if you turn all the eye candy up. Hard to compare
settings with all the new options, but it definitely is tougher on the
system (at least for this leaked build). The Solar effects in particular
will bring you to single-digit FPS for a second or so when the sun gets into
the***pit. Couldn't handle that so I turned it off. Overall, the game
looks ***y good, though..
More importantly, how's it go? Note that traction control and ABS are on by
default in this demo, and you can't shut 'em off. But 'round the track, you
can really feel the new tire model. There's a much more pronounced "edge"
to the grip than in any previous Papy sim (GPL-onwards). No more floating;
you definitely feel hooked up now. And you notice the surface bumps more
too, even though they're not going to do much on the banking at Talladega.
Seems easier to drive, all in all, and my laps were quicker in '03 going
back and forth with '02, by about a second or so. The sound is new, with a
higher pitched engine sound (no go for 3D in-car engine sound with the
Audigy - surprise!), and there's less tire squeal at low slip angles. Don't
know if that's the tire model or the sound, though.
At first glance, the AI look a lot better. Running in a pack at Dega, we
were lined up running high when Bodine dropped out of line 4 back from the
front. Benson was ahead in 2nd and dropped out to form a low line with him.
Nice mirror-watching! Nadeau thought he'd join the fun down low from 5th
but Kenseth got down there first from 6th and closed the gap on him. Those
three hooked up and hung the high line guys out to dry. The high line then
dropped back and slotted in behind, ready to repay the favor. Nice.
Back to the track... ;-)
