N2002 FPS Drop

by Schoone » Fri, 12 Apr 2002 22:24:36

I seen a thread on here some time ago about FPS dropping as the race moves
along but didn't notice if it got resolved.

Last night I was running an online race and half way through a 30% race at
Daytona my FPS when from 50-70 down to 20-30 for no obvious reason.  Anyone
know what might cause this and how to fix it?
Running at 1600*1200 32BIT on a Radeon 8500.  PC is an AMP XP1600 with
512DDR Ram.

Like I said it was fine all evening through practice and the first part of
the race and then just tailed off.

I've heard damaged cars can cause a loss in frame rate.

Might figure -a perfectly flat rear spoiler is only gonna be 2 polygons.
Crumple it up and it'd be more like a dozen.

a few dozen cars like that and it's 200-300 more polys extra.

BUT - I really cant imagine 300 polys affecting fps too much.

Might it be that the size of the replay being saved is causing problems?

from what I remember reading, the damaged cars slowing things down was not a
result of having to display the extra polys on damaged cars, but having to
do with the calculations of the reduced performance of damaged cars.

There are lots of potential reasons, but the one I remember being discussed in the past was skid
marks....try turning them off and see if fps stays up.

I never noticed this big a hit when I was running OpenGL at 1024.  maybe I
have to switch back or try lowering resolution.

i run n2002 at 2x aa and vsync enabled, so I turned skid marks off when I
lowered a lot of the other options to keep fps at a decent level. Never even
missed em.

Er, what peformance difference ?<G>  Not a whole lot different than N4 it
seems, in the damage model.

It is neither damaged cars (I play with no damage so I don't have to keep
getting
wrecked by slow junkers who won't move out of the *&%%$*^% way when I
try to lap them), nor it is related to replay memory (set that down to 0 once
and
the frame rate drain kept happening).  It IS related to the speed of the track
(it is
horrendous at Coca Cola and Zenjoltis with no plates and low spoilers-single
digits after 40 laps; short-trackers might not even notice it even during a 500
lap
race).  One of the reasons I  upgraded (128-512 RAM; TNT2-GF3) was to solve
this problem, but alas...(now I'll have to get a new processor and hope that
works...).

My guess would be you got near a car with some damage.  If you had caught
up to a lapped car that had a bunch of sheet metal damage, this seems to
impact the frame-rate.

Even after that car is gone from sight or when no other cars or very few are
in the field of view?

My FPS problems turned out to be related to Zone Alarm... :(  Turned it off
while racing online, and haven't had any problems since.
Gotta find another firewall, though.  I'll probably get a Linksys or
something...

I't's the damage. Get a full field of cars and intentionally cause a huge
wreck or two at a track like Daytona and then watch as the fps drop.
