N2002 Patch FPS

by David G Fishe » Sat, 27 Apr 2002 07:06:12

With the new patch, in D3D, my fps are the same in testing as before the
patch, but definitely worse in races with the AI.

My fps in OpenGL in testing are lower than D3D, but better than D3D in AI
races.

It says in the patch read me that they made some changes with the AI car
graphics. Have they done something with those cars that is now lowering the
fps in D3D?

my fps are way down, even in testing, with the new patch.  the sound is
freaking fabulous.  i've uninstalled and reinstalled.... running without the
patch, frame rates consistantly over 33 at most bogged points and usually in
the 40's.

with the patch 20's and sometimes down to 18.  but my my my doesn't it sound
good?!

i'm with david, what happened with the graphics and is there a way to get a
happy medium between the two... if it's just the fix for the sound dropping
the fps,,,,, i'll have to go with all the crackling, annoying as it may
be....

again, excellent job on the sound.

btw i just thought.... i never compared the ini files between the patch and
original install....anyone notice if there's something majorly (hehe)
different between the two....yeah, i'm lazy, two separate installs and don't
want to do it again....

I agree and went back to the pre patch..for me the sound wasn't that much
better...the spotter was still bad...

well the spotter sounded about the same to me, or rather, i thought it was
realistic to have static using radios ;-).  it's just the crackles,
especially, in the turns.  the original seems to have a solid sheet of
distortion on part of the sounds......the patch didn't.

god , i made the mistake of checking the sierra board to see if there was
any updates or reports or what not.... yeah, plenty of reports.  a statement
of problem or how great it was and then 70 posts to flame whatever religion
you didn't belong to following.....  don't think i'll check in on them next
year!

This is easy to fix. Just copy the original rend_d3d.dll file from your
N2002 CD to the Papyrus directory. Seems they changed or updated that file
but after I copied the original back, my FPS was back to where it should be.
So far this has worked perfectly and I still have all the benefits of the
patch. I don't know why they updated this file but I'm sure they have a
reason(s). I have not had any problems by using the old file.

Well I knew there had to be a catch. I never race online so that wasn't
tested. Oh well, try this. I think that the new rend_d3d.dll doesn't
automatically turn off the "vsync" for your videocard & monitor, so try
turning it off. Should be somewhere in your videocard settings.

well, guess i'll wait for the patch for the patch or something..... i'd
rather be racing ai with over 40 fps than this thing that drops me into the
20's in testing only.....

thnx,

But since opengl has been updated to match the texture compression with
d3d, why not try that?  I suspect the opengl performance will be very close
to any previous level.

been wondering about that my own self.   open gl works on this card... kyro
(i know i know!  but getting near 50 fps has been beautiful for me in n2k
with medium most things!)  but when i try the configure thingie with opengl,
the configuration just locks up and doesn't respond...

any ideas on that?  the hercules web site is down or i'd be trying to find
the faq on that.  ay yi yi. no entiendo.

hey,  i just upgraded from this last year from a thriller for gpl and voodoo
2 for n3. guess i just need to spend more than 15 bucks for my next video
card..... so, i hope i'm not coming across as whining or anything...  just
wondering what the hell happened?

thnx for staying up this late?

"reverend rob"
but when i try the configure thingie with opengl,

That's kinda odd, since N2002 has been out now for a couple of months?(I
have very little grasp of past time...2 weeks could be 2 months or even 6
months to me...very difficult when somebody asks me a question about an
event in the not-to-distant past)
Anyhow....this is the second thread now posting about the opengl config
NOT working.  I'm curious.  So I'll cover the basics.  I have found if I
simply re-do the current settings, then the whole process is done in a
flash...no black screen, no text about finding fast texture memory etc.  So
try this...configure n2002 first for D3d, then choose opengl and try again.
or try changing your screen resolution, anything to convince the program NOT
to skip the testing.
