GPL Locks Up

by Don Farringto » Wed, 30 Dec 1998 04:00:00

GPL locks up with error msg:    invalid page fault
                                kernel32.dll at 015f:bff9d709

                                reg eax=c002f8d0  etc...

Usually locks up when on track and seems worse when using 19 opponents
than when using 5 opponents but eventually locks up even at 5 opponents
No errors when using any other software ie. IE5 and Communicator4.5).

I assembled system from parts obtained at Wintergreen (first attempt).

System
Windows98 (all devices listed are PlugnPlay)
Intel PII450
ENPC KB21 Motherboard
64 MB pc100 sdram
Matrox Millennium G200 AGP
Diamond Monster 3d 12 MB using 3dfx.com rkv2 voodoo2 drivers
CL Awe64 Soundcard
US Robotics 56K Voice Int Modem
Directx6 installed

Currently have 'poll with interrupts' disabled on W98 game controller
and 'dont sync buffer swaps....' checked on voodoo2 control panel.

Have updated Windows98 from Microsoft site.

Same lockup ocurrs in Warbirds and F1RS.

I am out of ideas and need help in worst way.

Thanks in advance.

GPL Locks Up

by Lutrel » Thu, 31 Dec 1998 04:00:00

When I got my new system (P2 350 ,128MB PC100, Asus BX MB, W98, Millenium,
M3D 2 12MB with drivers ver.205,SB Live,USR 56k ) It seemed to work fine
with the desktop and the game Incoming that cam with M3D 2.
Then it crashed with a blue screen and error message -Fatal exception has
occurred at 0028:C1Cf8F in VXD EMUK10K1- after about 10 min. in a 3D screen
saver. Then I treid to run Unreal and it crashed as soon as the game tried
to start. I thought it was a V2 problem and downloaded the latest drivers,
but still crashed. I then downloaded the latest drivers for everything else
,but it still crashed. Called the computer store and they siad it sounds
like bad memmory so I took it in and they exchanged the memory and now it
works fine. Seems the heavy load on the bad  memmory made it crash.
Another problem I had was only with GPL when I installed Direct X 6 was  the
screen would lock up. I had to place the glide2x.dll,glide3x.dll and
glide2x.ovl files from DX 5 into the GPL directory and also set the M3d 2 to
90Mhz. This let me use the M3D 2 drivers ver.205 for all other games.
My guess with an invalid page fault ,is that you still have a problem with
the drivers or Dx6. If you can stil go back to the desktop after the error,
then its probably not the memmory.
Good Luck ,
Lutrell :-)
