Just put a machine together for my teammate with a V5 5500 in it.  Nice
card!  Just make sure you have ample room in front of your AGP slot
though, it's a *long* card!  To put one in my case, I'd have to move 2
of my 3 hard drives.  Have fun!

awesome card, I love it, Nascar 3 and GPL look amazing. No more jaggies.
NFS-PU is just simply amazing,

Great card.  Not nearly as fast as the GE Force cards but the
anti-aliasing feature lets you run in 800*600 with better quality than

1600*1200 without anti-aliasing. Card a little pricey at $299 but well
worth it.  Anti-aliasing really spoils you. Don't think I could go
back to a card without it. Need a fast computer to really take
advantage of card because it is taxing on your CPU.

Is an AMD Athlon 600mhz CPU  (running at 750mhz regularly, sometimes
more ...   with an OC card), 256mb Corsair PC-100 SDRAM, on an Asus
K7M, with two IBM 7200 ATA-66 HD drives, an AOpen 52x CD-ROM, using an
Aureal SQ-2500 sound card ...

and currently running a Voodoo 3 3000 ...

quick enough to take advantage of the V-5's features and
graphics horsepower ???

Really? I have had both cards and the speed difference in sims is
negligible. With FSAA though I find running at high res is just too
much for this card. 800x600 and lower is usally good.

I think the big area of speed difference is the OpenGL drivers/performance.
Most sims use D3D, so the cards will be more closely matched there.  Plus
the cards speed won't shine through in a CPU intensive game.  Only thing
with a V5 is that you might miss having hardware T&L the day N4 and WSC are
released.  Then again you might have upgraded by then anyway.

Your system *should* be sufficient, but it probably isn't. Most Athlon
users have been disappointed with the performance of the V5 so far.
The general consensus seems to be that the drivers are not well
optimized for 3DNow, making an Athlon perform like a comparably
clocked Celeron.

With a Coppermine P3 the card is fantastic, but for right now I would
recommend you wait and see if 3dfx is able to improve their drivers.

Don't play Nascar so T&L has no use for me still. Maybe for B172 I
will need T&L though.

I considered adding another, but I already have 4 IDE devices.  I don't feel
lucky enough to try adding another IDE interface.

It looks great!  Glide 22bit filter is really shining in this game.  It looks way better
than under D3D or OpenGL.  The colors are much darker and details like decals, road
marks, and billboard look very clear..  However, I seem to feel that under Glide GPL is
still dark, even at 3 gamma setting.  Getting 36 fps consistently under 4X FSAA and 800 x
600.  But 4X FSAA under 1027 x 768 gives me about 24 fps during training.  Seriously, I
can't tell the difference.  I can get 36 fps with 2X FSAA and 1027 x 768.  However, I
still can see some jaggies far ahead down the road.

ROTFL!!  Yep.  I got an Abit BE6-2 for a mobo, so I have a primary &
secondary IDE that support 2 devices each, along with a primary &
secondary ATA-66 IDE that also support 2 devices each.  On the ATA-66, I
have a 15GB used for Win98, along with a 13GB on the primary master.
Primary slave is an 8.1GB dedicated entirely to my Linux-Mandrake 7.1.
Secondary master is my Creative Labs CD-RW, and secondary slave is my
cheapo 24x CD-ROM.  Love this mobo, there's plenty of room for more IDE
toys!  As long as the power supply keeps up, of course. <g>

Where did you get this information? I am curious since the CGW reviewers
found the V5's performance on the Athlon to be comparable to the GF2's. They
had convince me that V5 was the way to go for Athlon users. But I can
believe they don't know what they are talking about.

I am concerned, since systems of my type (Athlon/VIA KX133 chipset with a SB
live! soundcard) often have problems with Geforce cards. It almost sounds
like I have NO good upgrade path!

I haven't had a lot of time for GPL lately, but did put in a V5-5500 a
couple weeks ago and took GPL out for a test spin.  I have an 800 MHz
Athlon, btw...  I used the Glide drivers and noticed a few quirks at 1024
and 4xFSAA, but didn't have time to pursue.  I thought it looked excellent
at 1024x768 and 2xFSAA and at 800x600 w/4xFSAA.  I recall the framerate
meter being pegged at 36 in the latter two cases (on the Monza circuit).
Previously, I'd been running this on a Banshee/333 Celeron and got about
19-21 fps in 800x600 (no FSAA of course).  Will pursue this further as time
permits, but felt very satisfied with the 1024 by 2xFSAA mode.

Was that in testing only?  I haven't been able to keep the 2xfsaa from
locking up in glide.  If I use the d3d, then I can use 2x  but not with
glide.
