Is this a worthwhile upgrade, given that I would still use my current
Celeron 433?  I'd definitely expect some improvement, but I'm
wondering whether the CPU may prove a bottleneck.  I know GPL likes
it's CPU quota.

BTW, this is only being considered as the card is a possible
second-hand bargain.

Definite performance boost, but don't expect miracles, especially if
you race against the AI much. They chew a lot of CPU power.

kept the same V3 3000, the difference was pretty huge. It went from
being iffy at 800x600 to solid at 1024 with a full field, 1280 for
multiplayer/single player laps.

A V5 with a 800+ mhz cpu is a good combo for GPL. If you have much
more cpu power, the v5 becomes the bottleneck.

Agree w. Rafe.  I still race w. a V5500 'cuz I love the colors (saturation)
altho the rez isn't as fine as w. a GF2 MX (an terrific $90 card).  But,
yeah, a Cely 433 is one rung from falling off the bottom of the ladder.

A CPU update would be better spent money.

Hmm,
I just upgraded my CPU from a Cel 450 to a Cel 900 with a V3 2000.
The V3 runs like a champ on the new setup, so there was still enough potential.
I think you should upgrade your CPU.

Agree totally, but the poster was saying that the V5 was a 2nd hand
bargain. It'd still be an improvement over the V3 with the old
celeron.

I'm with Jens on this one (C400 to c950 w/ V3 2000).  Given the price of celeries
today, the V5 would have to be dirt cheap to be much less than a new cpu.  Of course
this is assuming the mobo/slotket, heatsink/fan, etc, doesn't need to be upgraded as
well. :-)

I should either:
open my eyes or
drink less or
read more carefully.
Didn't see the 2nd hand note
