GPL + Voodoo 3 and N3 + Voodoo 3 = Fun!

by Ed Carpente » Mon, 14 Feb 2000 04:00:00

Well, I did it!
I got myself a Voodoo 3 3000 and Jammed that Puppy in my Compaq system. WOW!
What a difference!
I could have sworn that I saw an fps of 40 a few times while making a few
laps of the Glen.
It is true, the added fps make the cars in GPL driveable. I need lots of
practice, but after putting in the Voodoo 3 I dropped my lap times by almost
28 seconds. I'm glad that the Voodoo 3 worked this good, I was starting to
think that the problem was with me.
The Voodoo 3 also allowed me to enjoy N3 the way it was ment to be! I have
been suffering with crappy graphics and no effects since the first week N3
hit the shelves. Why didn't someone make me do this sooner?

Anyway the bottom line is this... If you are torturing yourself by trying to
run N3 or GPL without a Voodoo graphics card then SAVE YOURSELF NOW! Buy
One!

Put a fan on the 2000 and overclock it to at *least* 3000 speeds without
any problem. It doesn't make that much difference to be honest, but buying
the 2000 was a good choice.

Careful you're on the upgrade for GPL route, last march I bought GPL for a
bargain 20, huh one V3, mobo & k6-2 450, Microsoft force feedback wheel and
a 21" monitor later it suddenly seems a bit pricey. Worth all the dosh tho
:))
I also vowed at the beginning of last year to never upgrade for the sake of
a single game.

I'd like to agree with both of these point.

I eventually decided to upgrade from voodoo2 to v3 2000 yesterday and
the improvement is stunning. With P3-450 at 1024x768 I get a solid 36fps
in training mode with everything (apart from drivers arms and***pit
texture) on - may even have done so at 1280x1024 as well. Previously I
had to reduce objects to "many" and res to 800x600.

v3 2k handles overclocked AGP bus ok so that could run at back of grid
at Monte Carlo at 1024x768 (again everything apart from arms and***pit
on) and get 34fps+ at start by bumping FSB to 124 (i.e. P3-558 and AGP
at 83MHz) - FSB at 133Mhz looked ok as well in a brief trial (P3-600 +
AGP at 89MHz) though I've read that 83/84MHz is safest limit for V3 AGP
overclock - certainly 1280x1024 at this speed died quickly! Again with
V2 limited many objects and 800x600 I had to OC to 600Mhz to get 30fps+
at start.

And I haven't even thought about overclocking the V3 yet!

However, as mentioned, be warned - GPL encourages you to upgrade as
basically due to it I've moved from K6-200 + S3 DX/GX to P3-450 + V32k
(via V2) along with ForceRS wheel - but improvement at each stage has
been worth it!

N.b. also increasd memory to 128MB from 64MB which makes GPL startup
dramatically faster!

Actually OC-ing the V3 turns out to have no noticable effect - looks
like saving money and getting to V3 2000 was the right move :-)
