Any advice on using GeForce3 AGP & Voodoo 5500 together?

by Glaspa » Mon, 24 Jun 2002 07:42:09

(Before I posted, I spent several hours over two days trying to get
any info on this, but it's very hard to find. I'd appreciate any help.)

I currently use a Gainward GeForce3 Ti200.

I'd like to add a PCI Voodoo5 5500 for older games written for Glide.
The screenshots that I've seen on older games seem to look better
than the what I get on my GF3. (that is, games written for glide)

I'm using an AMD 1600+/Abit KX7-333R with Win98SE.

I realize that it might be asking a lot out of one machine.
I do have an older 733/PIII that could receive it, but the
AMD machine is built for games. The PIII is dedicated to other tasks.

Is there any performance difference between the PCI and AGP 5500?
I read somewhere that the Voodoo doesn't really utilize the AGP buss.

Recommendations?

Have any of you used a this configuration under Win98SE?
Would it be more practical under XP?

Thanks...

folks used to do that all the time, with V3pci's and TNT2's.  But I
haven't heard anyone doing it lately.  Metabyte who make the wickedGL
drivers did something like that where you could even run both card
together... I'm pretty sure that didn't pan out...but if you could find a
cheap PIII then a second box would probably be more reliable and easier to
boot....
good luck....

I appreciate the comments.

You're probably right that it would be a hassle.

Maybe I'll ditch my second crappy monitor,
buy a usb KVM, then use both systems with
one monitor and share my usb Act-Labs wheel.

That way I would've have to juggle wheels, etc.

Thanks again...

Not exactly what you're asking, but I've run a V3 and a GeForce 2 together
before.  The VooDoo just needs to be pci only, no performance difference
between pci and agp that I noticed.

All I had to do was change one bios setting upon bootup to use the card of
choice.  Worked great.

I am by no means an expert, nor do I have any specific info about what you
are trying to do, but I'll throw my opinion out there. I think you would be
asking for a buttload of trouble.

If you can find any, it may be easier to run two Voodoo 2s in SLI for your
Glide games. They will not perform as well as a V5 but you'll have more
chance of having a stable system

I agree, I've run the same thing, and it is really simple, especially with
the Nvidia drivers, just setup the Voodoo as the second monitor.

Hiya Glaspak,
I'm using a PCI V5 5500 and a AGP Gainward GeForce4 4600ti in my
Athlon XP 1900+, EPOX 8K7A Win98SE system and have had no problems
with it.  My monitor has 2 inputs so there is no need for a KVM switch, but
I do
need to reboot and select in the BIOS which video card (AGP or PCI) I want
to use.
As far as a difference between the PCI and AGP 5500 you won't notice it
in GPL with your Athlon 1600+.....but if all you do is "play" 3dmark2001se
then the PCI version scores about 150 to 200 points lower.

Hey K O,

I've been to your site before to gaze longingly
over your triple display set-up.

Were the screenshots taken with a Voodoo?
They seem to have a much clearer depth of field.

It strains my eyes sometimes on long tracks
looking for the upcoming corner. (in GPL)
Also, far away objects seem to flicker or just
look unusually bright (LOD adjustment?).

A lot of times, screenshots that I see taken from
a voodoo card seem to have much better depth.
Possibly due to the FSAA. With my GF3, the AA
just doesn't look that good, even at 4X. Certainly,
not good enough to justify the performance hit.

Could you compare the visual quality of the GF4
and the Voodoo5 in GPL?

It is rumored that the next-gen GeForce will finally
incorporate some of the technology that Nvidia
scored when buying 3DFX.

BTW, If you need a new toy, the GPLEA
version2 Ferrari is out as of today!
