Has anyone been able to get the textures to look right in this game with
this video card? Mine looks like this:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/~sir_walleye/NR2002ss001.jpg
http://www.racesimcentral.net/~sir_walleye/NR2002ss003.jpg

1024x768x16 D3D. Game plays great otherwise.

I have driver 1.04.01 (last 3dfx release) and DX8.1. The readme.txt file in
the games install directory mentions this problem with the Voodoo3/5 and
KyroII cards. From the readme:

"-3Dfx Voodoo 3 and 5
Black or multi-colored bands can be seen in the lower mips of narrow
textures (walls, painted lines, etc.).  Additionally the OpenGL rasterizer
is not supported."

I have also recently "patched" the game. This video card works great with
all my other games and I don't want to buy a new video card just yet.

Sorry if this has been brought up before. Thanks.

Same here, and I've tried some of the various 3rd part drivers out there
too, until my new vid card arrives (not nVIDIA), I'll just have to live
with it I guess

I switched from a Voodoo 5 to a ATI 8500 and I am very pleased
with the results. When/if you're getting an ATI card go directly to
http://www.ati-news.de/HTML/news.html and download the
6.13.6071 drivers. In Nascar 2k under OpenGL I am having very
good FPS and Video quality :).
I really loved my V5500 and its still in my wife's computer :) but the
ATI card really blows it away FPS wise and is not quite but almost
as nice quality wise IMO.

Good luck to ya,
Dave B

I went thru the same procedure, this is the sim that made me jump from a
Voodoo user to being a Nvidiot.   I tried every driver and setting I could
find trying to fix that....no go.   But I still grimace when I enable the
so-called FSAA that Nvidia has...oh well maybe those fired 3dfx employees
can work with the Nvidia boys to get a FAST card with GOOD/GREAT fsaa.
Something like a GF 6000?????   :)

Looks like I'll be buying a GeForce4 Ti4200 as soon as they become available
this month.

Oh well. The Voodoo served me well for almost 2 years. Thanks guys.

FSAA is one of the reasons I'm going with ATI, most reviews I've read
seems to agree that ATI has superior FSAA to nVIDIA, for various
reasons, small(ish) monitor and sitting a fair bit away from it, I'd
rather run lower resolutions and enable FSAA, I'm currently running
N2002 in 8x6, 1024x768 is the highest I can go and still make out some
of the stuff on my screen, which is why my V5 is still getting me by, I
do reckognize the fact that it's nearing the end of it's useful life as
a vid card for Gfx intensive games like N2002

In fact, I've already oredered the card, Radeon 8500LE 128 MB, but it's
on back order....long back order

Have a look at this site www.overclockers.com and scroll down the main page
to the April 29th section... look for an article titled "GF4 TI4200s Coming"
with a link in the body of the paragraph labeled "something you should check
out". It links to an article giving people who like using high resolutions
or 4X FSAA a heads up on memory bandwith limitations of the GF4 4200 that
may not make it the best deal out there.
Under the same homepage under the May 1st section there is a link to a
report from xbit labs reporting the new Gainward 4200 will ship with 4ns.
memory chips on it's 128mb. version. Let's hope others follow suit as in my
part of the world (Canada) Gainward is not that readily available... (at
least that's what my local stores tell me.).
I was really waiting for the 4200s to ship to upgrade my V5 but I put a very
high premium on FSAA (both performance and quality of image) so until I see
some reports done on actual shipping models I am going to hold off ordering
anything. I think my buying decision pendulum is swinging slowly back to ATI
unless I read some really impressive articles on the 4200. Those other
GeForce models (4400, 4600) are just too far out of my price range... that's
one of the big reasons I am leaning towards ATI. Price/performance is a big
factor for me.

Robin

Yeah price/performance is big for me too. I don't want to spend more than
$150 and I am swaying towards the Radeon 8500LE especially because it is the
only card in the Nascar 2002 readme.txt that is not noted as having problems
with the game. Because of this, I am starting to think the Radeon is what
the boys at Papy are using so if it's good enough for them, it's good enough
for me :-)

I looked at your picture, and didn't see anything wrong the first time.  Then I
re-read your message, and it STILL took a while to see what you meant.  I look
at those bands as helping with my perception of the wall at distance.  I think
I noticed it the first time I played, then I assimilated it.  It doesn't bother
me, and my FPS is even slower than yours.<shrug>

I recently changed out my V5 for a GeForce because of NR2002. I hated to
do it :-(((((((((
