V5 5500 AGP - Here We Go

by Peter Hoope » Sat, 15 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Well, with my eldest daughter off to France  for a school trip for a week
early in the morning and my wife out all weekend stewarding at the Tina
Turner concert at Wembley I decided it was a good time to try out the V5
5500 card that I have been thinking of getting lately. So off I went on an
extended lunch break this afternoon to the Electronic Boutique in Debenhams
in Bond Street and picked one up. I now have 14 days to try it out. Any
improvement it gives will have to be quite significant otherwise I won't be
able to justify keeping with the high price we have to pay over here in
England for our PC stuff (this card cost me 249.99).

It is now sitting on my shelf waiting to be installed :O) I think I will
wait until tomorrow when it is just me and my younger daughter here before I
give it a go...

I'll let you all know how it fares if there is enough people interested.

Regards

Peter Hooper

You have alot more patience then me....I would have that thing opened half
way home, call to the house to tell everyone to get off the computer, and
make sure that all the cables are unplugged by the time I get home....lol

You have far more self discipline than I do.  It'd been opened, the
quick-start manual would have been half-read by the second traffic
light, & it'd be up & running in my machine within an hour of getting
home.  Keep us posted, along with system specs.  Good Luck!

I'm glad someone else opens boxes at traffic lights and half tries to read
the manual before he gets home because that's exactly what I did when I got
my V5500.
By the way it works great I'm a bit dubious about the trees in gpl in d3d
mode they seem to have a ghost effect around the whole tree miner point I
know.

system spec Plll 450 128 ram V5500 not a great difference in fps I was using
Voodoo 2 x2 in sli mode

P3 450 not enough to take advantage of the V5
probably need 600 mhz+ to really take advantage of the v5

OK I am almost ready to install this card now but thought I would check here
for some final advice first. What is the best way to install it. I currently
have a 32mb TNT2 in the AGP slot so I assume that I first set the video mode
to standard VGA then switch off the pc. Remove the TNT2, replae it with the
new V5 and then go through the installation procedure in Win 98 SE.

If this is incorrect can you let me know please.

Many thanks

Peter Hooper

That should do the trick.  You may though want to go through and manually
delete any D3D .dlls in your System directory, and maybe even go through the
registry manually and delete any references to your TNT2.  I had some rogue
.dll or registry reference to my Voodoo 3 that caused the V5 to act weird
when exiting a Direct3D game, and doing this solved it.  Most people don't
seem to have to do this though.

Oh yeah, another note - after you get the V5 installed, go to your Device
Manager and make sure it shows up as "3dfx Voodoo 5" and not "Voodoo Series"
or something like that.  If it does have "Voodoo series", bring up it's
properties and click on "Update Driver" - then point it to the driver
location on the driver CD.  It should then show up properly as "3dfx Voodoo
5".  Sometimes the install doesn't put the right drivers in, and this takes
care of it.

That way should be ok, but I would use the find feature to search for
any Nvidia file and delete them. Don't forget nvOpenGL. Then run
regedit and do the same thing in the registry. I do this while in safe
mode instead of switching to generic vga drivers. There is a text file
available that tells you how to uninstall Nvidia cards correctly but I
can't remember the url, sorry.

install the card :O(
Will do so tonight or tomorrow and report back on my findings then....
