Nvidia 23.11 drivers are VERY good for f1-2001 beta patch

In short.

It fixes a serious frame rate issue which only occurred when I was
spinning in a large cloud of smoke/dust.

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

In Detail:

My Rig:

MSI 6380RU-Pro2 amd XP 1600+
Geforce2 GTS (not ultra or pro).
256MB pc2100 ram.
98SE

I run at 1024x768x16bit with 2x2 antialiasing (set in the control
panel).

All detail levels set to full or high (whichever was the most).

LOD set to 5 in default file (I like lots of polys OK?).

Before 23.11 I wuld get a serious frame rate hit (ie drop to 2fps ish)
when I was spinning in a cloud of smoke or dust and another car drives
past.

After the patch frame rate doesn't drop appreciably with dust/smoke.

I think there was some kind of alpha issue because smoke and dust use
alpha.

Also the broadcast overlays and hud use alpha I believe so that might
work much better now.

Yay nvidia!

Seriously ***ed to F1-2001 with the FF patch.

Bill,
your system is very similar to mine.
here:
MS K7T 266 RU 2
MSI Geforce2 GTS 64 DDR
256 MB
98SE

I'm having some problems, is it the same on your system?
In all D3D games I get stutter in the statics (background), when going over 800
x 600 or appying FSAA.
This was even worse first, when I had a SBLive installed. GPL started ***
heavily after a lap or so.
Now I use the onboard soundchip chip, not nice though.

I suspect that the background stutter has to do with shared interrupts. USB and
Geforce are both on IRQ11, but I have no idea how to assign them to different
IRQs.

How about your system?

Do you have plug and play O/S enabled in the BIOS? If so disable it and try
that. If that still causes a problem then try swaping cards around into
different slots. After disabling Plug and Play O/S you should see a list
come up with all the IRQ s and were they are assigned so you shouldn't need
to do a full windows boot every time. If all that fails you should be able
to force IRQs in the BIOS.

Nope.I run at 1024x768x16 2x2 antialiased and don't see any stutters in
any game (I play AlienVsPredator 2, Quake3 arena, startrek voyager, GPL,
CMR2 and F12001 - AvP2, GPL and CMR2 are D3D).I only use 2x2 in F1-2001 -
i use 32bit in the rest of the games.

I also have a sblive. My bios is set to PlugNPlay.

Do you have and up-to-date via 4in1 driver set? (I am using the new 35v
drivers - but the 34's were OK too - - try http://www.racesimcentral.net/ ). You
should set the AGP to Turbo mode when you run the via instal to get 4x
AGP. (You might want to check your bios settings also since it can get
enabled/disabled in there).

I also have the 3.3 bios from the msi site (http://www.racesimcentral.net/) (this
together with their new
USB 2.0 driver enables the NEC USB2.0 controller on the motherboard for
Win98 - but I haven't tried the controller out yet).

I use an original logictech wingman formula force with the 4.11
wingmaneteam.com drivers.

That is possible. Basically the slot position of the card determines the
IRQwhich is why people are suggesting moving your card. The MSI manual
tells you the IRQ for each slot IIRC.

I certainly fixed problems on my old A7V mobo by moving the sblive around.

One more thing - you  might have to enable sb16 emulation in the sblive. I
HAD to do this on my a7v for the thing to work properly (essentially the
card seemed to use an IRQ even though the emulation wasn't enabled)

See above :-)

Your stuttering does sound like some kind of IRQ conflict but there are
many things that can go wrong.

Talk about YMMV :-)

What is your graphics card? Mine is GTS2 64MB DDR.

I didn't have the problem at 32bit but I prefered the 2x2 antialiased and
16bit from a speed/quality perspective.

THe workaround of course is to turn off effects but then you don't get
the tyre tracks you leave behind

<SNIP>

Interestingly, I can't use the 23.11 drivers with my GeForce3 on an XP1500+
The 3D setup locks up everytime I try to run it and NFS5 won't run at all.
I've gone back to the 21.88 drivers that will run everything on my box (at
the moment!) Don't you love "bleeding edge" technology?
         Cheers...
           Phillip...

comments are thrown in.

latest 4 in 1 are installed.
4 x AGP (switched on with GFtweak) didn't solve the problem, but improved a bit.

I think I have the 3.2 bios, doewnloaded 2 weeks ago or so.

old 3.62 here. Will try the 4.11 asap

I don't have any addon card installed ITM. The SBLife I brought back after my
initial problems. Running the onboard soundchip ITM. Also collides with one of
this USB thingies.

Thanks Bill, again some things to test.

Will try to disable that.
About addon-cards: there aren't any.

Thanks
