nVidia 23.11 + Windows XP + N4 = One Crashy Sim...

by The Other Larr » Tue, 18 Dec 2001 10:57:59

Is anyone having serious problems with nVidia's Det-4 23.11 drivers?
Particularly with XP and N4 ?

I've also noted that Flight Simulator 2002 is none too stable with them.

N4 will run for a period of time, but then crash-out with the screen locked.
The only way to recover is to mash the reset button on the computer.

I wen't back to the 22.50 drivers that came with my GeForce 3 Ti500, and so
far it's been ok.

There seems to be a lot of chatter all over the net right now concerning
these drivers, too.

TIA!

With Geforce3 and N4 you should be using OpenGL, from what I understand you should get much better
performance...

Hi Larry,

it's probably got nothing to do with N4. WinXP seems to have problems with
installing some sorts of drivers, don't know if it's non-WHQL related or
not.

The NG's are full of these probs under WinXP, across all hardware platforms,
VIA/Intel, Intel/Intel, AMD/VIA, etc. It's apparently not limited to Nvidia,
although that's where it seems to occur most frequently, but that could be
because the Nvidia cards are so widespread, especially in the power ***
community. But I've read about a case where the installation of new
soundcard drivers caused a similar instability.

You may want to have a look at your Registry, into
"[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nv4]"
and see if the entry
"ImagePath" points to "System32\DRIVERS\nv4.sys".
If it does, try changing it to
"ImagePath": "System32\DRIVERS\nv4_mini.sys"

XP seems to forget to register the latest version of nv4_mini.sys correctly,
and keeps pointing to the older nv4.sys that belongs to the 12.40 drivers XP
installs originally. I'm not sure it'll help you, but it could.

Good luck!

Achim

But since WinXP is the common factor

23.11 was awful on my 1.5 ghz P4. I couldnt play Rally Trophy or Ghost
Recon because of the horrible screen stutter and insane load times. I ended
up finding the Detonator Destroyer file which fixed all my probs. I had to
remove 23.11 Nvidia drivers using Add/Remove progs. Then I ran the Detonator
Destroyer program, rebooted, installed older Nvidia drivers. Fixed it all.
No more stuttering in any of the games I was having probs w. before. I didnt
know how awesome Ratty Trophy is until doing this. The sense of speed is
excellent.

I wonder if you had tried the destroyer BEFORE using the 23.11's?  It
sounds like you had leftover files from previous driver versions.

nVidia 23.11 + Windows XP + N4 = One Crashy Sim...

by The Other Larr » Fri, 21 Dec 2001 13:52:42

Though I am not convinced that the 23.11's are a particularly good driver
release by nVidia (the complaints all over the web are pretty steady), I
think I found the specific problem on my end.

There seems to be a problem with ABIT's 5W release of the ABIT KG7 BIOS.
There are definite patterns developing over on the ABIT newsgroup, and so
far I think eveyone has had their issue resolved by flashing back to the 5E
BIOS Rev.

My KG7 went back to being the absolute, rock-steady (best AMD I've every
used) system board that I was used to.  I have not seen a single 3D ***
freeze since I did it.

I'm still sticking with the 22.50 drivers though.  I don't hear too many
complaints about them and since I'm pushing 80-90fps in N4 I don't need to
be greedy for more speed :)

Hi Larry,

the 23.11 are excellent drivers. Best-ever visual quality.

Their prob might be that they tax the systems to the max, squeezing the last
bit of performance out of them. Well configured and stable systems can take
it, but systems that are not rock solid may run into trouble.

Not for everyone, that is for sure.

There are dozens of stories across the net investigating problems with the
23.11 drivers, as well as many, many user complaints.

The 23.11's are quite troublesome for many.

For me, the 22.50's are working great and I'm developing a new attitude
towards these nVidia drivers, especially NEDS.  If what I have works, and
there's nothing REALLY compelling about the new one's (and it's gotta be
more than 5fps improvement), then I'm not budging :)

nVidia 23.11 + Windows XP + N4 = One Crashy Sim...

by Joachim Trens » Sat, 22 Dec 2001 03:07:51

Hi Larry,

I think most of the probs reported about the 23.11 are really with WinXP,
and looking at how many probs WinXP has with all sorts of other drivers as
well, I'd say it's not that the 23.11 are particularly bad. They're just
pulled into the drain by XP's probs.

However, I absolutely agree with you that if you have working drivers,
there's no need to try others. Of course, people always think the new
drivers are better. But, that may not always be the case especially if they
are _beta_.

nVidia 23.11 + Windows XP + N4 = One Crashy Sim...

by Gary Saucie » Sat, 22 Dec 2001 08:02:01

These two things happened to me:

1.  When installing the 23.11 drivers in WinXP, I get an error message
stating that "these drivers have not been tested with Windows XP and
Microsoft strongly suggests stopping the installation"  When I stop the
installation my card won't configure in N4 properly.  When telling it to
continue installation it does configure, but......

2.  My framerates have dropped in half, from 40 fps to 20.

After hearing all the great things from people about how much Windows XP
boosted their *** framerates, I've concluded they are liars.  LOL
