Athlon XP 1900+/Asus A7N266-C [Nvidia NForce]?

Looking at putting together an inexpensive rig.  Been going back and
forth between the Asus A7V266-E [Via 266a] and the one below (as well
as Abit- ahhhh my head hurts from web surfing for info!).  Does this
sound OK, and if so, what would you recommend as far changes or for
hard drive, cd-rom? I just want the basics to start, for racing only.
Thanks.

Hi
I have just "invested" (!) in an Athlon 2000 with the A7V333 board (which
was actually cheaper than the 266; and I was told, better) with 512KB memory
and a Geforce 4Ti440 card; and I am totally impressed with the performance.
I have bought an Asus board for my last 3 computers and had zero problems
with them all.

Good luck and enjoy whatever you buy.
Hugh

I don't know if I'd trust the N-force, but I'm just naturally biased towards
on-board stuff.  You might want to check into the GeForce4 Ti4200 that is
supposed to come out soon, supposedly offering G4 performance (with reduced
clock/memory speeds from the 4400/4600) at around $200 or less.

Since the N-force is basicly a Geforce 2 even a GF3 would be a god choice.

I'm running an A7N266-C and it's rock solid.. fsb is overclocked to 146,
my athlon chip is 1Ghz -> 1.39Ghz which helps a lot in the racing
department.
Realise that Nforce 415D doesn't have on board graphic (and on the
version I got no lan (it's optional). There are some issues withe dolby
sound not working  with rear speakers, however this is driver issue..
that nvidia will fix.
I'll also got an abit NV7m (nforce420 chipset - on board GEforce2mx)
nice for playing quake etc, but haven't hit N2K2 yet.

NB: Important! - if you do get an nforce board (any type) make sure you
get your ram in a pair. it's not required to make it work, but it allows
the motherboard to make use of Twinbank access 128bit vs 64bit. This
alone grabbed me an extra 400 3Dmarks on the nforce420 (duron 950)
machine 1400->1800.

The board N415D only support AGP 4x 1.5volt cards so make sure you have
one of these, I'm using a Radeon 64DDR vivo at the moment, but will
upgrade to a nivida GeForce 4Ti4x00. - try www.komplett.co.uk for the
best prices.

I'm very happy with this board, much better that my via based abit (bios
f*?ked1!). I would never get another via based board.. the 4in1 drivers
are a nitemare.  Heard good things about sis boards.

Only other thing is my USB wheel doesn't keep working, fine for about
2-20 mins they directX can't see it move, I'm begining to think it's the
wheel (it's been "out the back in the garage area for a couple of
seasons" Trying to get another usb joystick to solve the problem.. But
not one else has reported any problems on the asus newsgroup.

Just an update to anyone reading.  No sure my wheel is doing something
weird as the same result happens on another machine.
It's wheel, drivers, or win2k.. but not the hardware..

Hi Hugh,

My system arrives on Monday and is configured similar to yours except an
Athlon 2100 and a Geforce 4 Ti4600.  I'm looking for the answer to the
following:
Under Windows XP with this type of system are you getting GPL running at
high frame rates with the detail slider all the way to the right and all the
track and car goodies?  Figure this will save having to rig up a dual boot
with Win 98.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not Hugh but the answer is "YES."

My sys is "only" a P4 1.8 with "only" a GF Ti 500 and I run GPL the way you
described with all the bells and whistles and track add car inprovements.

I have a dual boot but have yet to find a program I need the Win 98
partition for.  It just sits tgere, all alone . . . .

I have a Tbird 1.33 with an ATI Radeon 8500 and run GPL maxed out with 2x
FSAA and it stays pegged at 36 fps. Your new system should trounce mine so I
would say the answer is a big YES.

Vintook

P.S. I also ran GPL with this same rig and a 32mb Gforce2 MX card. It also
was pegged at 36 fps but without the FSAA.
