To compliment Tim's reply, for Socket A the Althon is faster for a given
'rating' (2800 etc), I believe the sepron rating is equivalent to
duron/celery clock speed rather than Athlon/P3.
Check the cache & actual clock speed, you may find a good sempron cheaper
than a similar spec (but different rating) Athlon for less money. You get
what you pay for at the end of the day ;-)

I came from work, so I am too tired to go through this list, but the
problem is in cache. I think sempron has 256kb, and athlon xp has 512. 2800+
sempron is the same as 2400+ athlon xp, in speed. -- Mario
I noticed the cache size was smaller on the sempron. I did find that the
clock speed isn't locked on the mobile sempron, however they are getting
harder to find and more expensive. I was hoping to just do a chip upgrade
instead of mobo v/card and ram.. The mobile sempron 2800 is easily oced at
2.4gig according to a lot of posts on newegg..
I don't know about that mobile sempron. Cache is tight passage. If
that mobile sempron has 256kb, I don't know how you can widen that passage.
This is how they efficiently downgrade a processor, even if you oc it. But,
I am not some big expert. Maybe it is OK. But, there is a sempron with
bigger cache. It is 3000+ or 3200+ (I am not sure), and I think it is as
much fast. Try to find if you can put that sempron onto your MB.
BTW, AMD stretched 3000+ speed number (I don't know about 2800+).
3000+ is only some 10% faster than 2400+. But this 10% is really what you
need, if you have 2400+. I upgraded from Athlon XP 2400+ (Thoroughbred) to
Athlon XP 3000+ (Barton, I hardly found it), and it is very much worth it. I
also only looked for a chip upgrade. -- Mario
