Athlon 64 processors and NR 2003

by Will_H#2 » Fri, 17 Sep 2004 09:12:11

I am looking to upgrade to an Athlon 64 bit processor and would like to know
if anyone has had success with this chip and NR 2003 and other games. This
is the setup I'm looking at :

MSI "K8N Neo2 Platinum" NVIDIA nForce3 ULTRA Chipset Motherboard For AMD
Socket 939 CPU

AMD Athlon 64 3400+, 512k L2 Cache ( Newcastle core )

Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy LS PCI Sound Card

Crucial 184 Pin 1GB DDR PC-3200 16T RAM

Thanks for any help or suggestions. Willie

In general the 64-bit processors will not benefit application which weren't
specifically written for it.

However they do provide better (read "faster") memory handling for
CPU/menory intensive applications (like Payrus simulations) in co-operation
with the beta 64-bit XP platform, so as a means of future proofing and
because of the secundary performance benifit, I'd say go for it.

Note that the MSI boards have been very picky about RAM.... at least they
were when I built mine 4-6 mos ago.  Check out their forums (if they're
still up) to see what's known to work.

I've been using a Socket 734 3200+ on a Gigabyte board with an ATI 9700/9800
Pro just fine.  The chip itself should be fine with all software.  It'll run
just like a 32-bit system until you're ready to make the move to 64-bit.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the 3400 is a 939 pin chip.  I could
be wrong.

I thought that started with the 3500.

My son upgraded to the same MSI motherboard and an athlon 64 3200+ with 512 mb
memory and a Gforce 6800 GT OC.  He got over 2X frame rate in NR2003 with more
eye candy than his Celeron 1.7  with Gforce MX400 64mb video. I would say the
chip is excellent for NR2003.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I will be going with the MSI K8N Neo2
Platinum 939 socket, with the AMD Athlon 64 3500+, 512K, L2 Cache BFG 6800GT
OC, 1Gig (2, 512's) Crucial Ballistix 184-Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 RAM, and a
Western Digital 160GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive. Hope to get some decent frame
rates now! ;-)

For what it's worth, my new setup is almost identical to yours.  I'm using
the same motherboard and memory without a problem so far.  One thing that
may be misleading is the configuration for making a dual-channel RAM setup.
You want to put a stick in the first and second slot (green and purple
slots, adjacent).

That's actually te opposite of the Asus A8V.  Are you sure of that?

I have to use slot 1 and 3 (the two blue slots).

Yep, that's why I said it was misleading.  The POST screen confirms I'm
running dual channel.  I guess MSI decided to be different.
