N4 & Windows XP

by Larr » Sun, 19 Aug 2001 19:17:53

I'm running Windows XP RC2.

Athlon 1.2/DDR, 512MB/ASUS A7V133/GeForce Pro 64MB, Turtle Beach Santa Cruz,
yada yada yada...

N4 runs EXTREMELY well under XP.  The frame rates are excellent.  I'm still
running well over 50fps in DirectX mode with the Hercules 12.40 drivers at
1600X1200/16bit.

The game is also very, very smooth.

I have two problems though....

1.  The sound is raspy as hell, especially in the lower RPM's.  This happens
with either my SoundBlaster Live X-Gamer or Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
installed.

2.  Not really a problem, more of an interesting observation - When run
under Windows XP, the car always, ALWAYS stalls the first time it starts up.
On the first start, the engine dies after about 1 second, then it restarts
back up again.  I never saw this until Windows XP.

So, the sound is the REAL problem.

I have a set of Klipsch ProMedia 5.1's coming and I'd like them to sound as
good as possible in N4.

TIA!

Larry what video card do you have? I have a voodoo and my framerate is down.

I have an SB live card too and am using the RC1 soundcard drivers in RC2. No
more crappy sound now.

This is good to hear.  XP sounds like a definite addition to my PC!

I find this to be true with W98 SE.  There's just way too much hiss in it.
There was a third party (Meat Water) sound pack that I tried for a while
which had more realistic engine sounds, but the hiss with it was even worse
than the stock sounds.  Did anyone else try this soundpack and have the same
experience as I?  I ask because I wonder if my Creative Labs Soundblaster
PCI 128 is partly to blame for my experience.

That's really odd.

I hope Meat Water works on thier sound pack to get rid of some of the hiss.
The engines sound a lot more "throaty" in their implementation.

Hercules Geforce II GTS Pro.

My frame rates are EXCELLENT with this card.

N4 is almost as processor intensive as it is Graphics intensive, so the
Athlon 1.2Ghz/DDR probably doesn't hurt :)

As for the SoundBlaster drivers, I tried everything.  The included drivers,
updated drivers from Windows Update for XP, and even the Win2K drivers from
Creative's site.

The all work, the card just sounds _***_.  Frankly, I've never been happy
with the sound of Soublaster Live cards, especially with Win2K and above.

This was the reason I bought the Hercules Game Theatre XP card.  It sounds
far, far better and had fewer compatibility problems.  Well, until Windows
XP came out :(

That's why I switched to the Turtle Beach Santa Cruze.  It has beta XP
drivers that work perfectly (other than the raspy sound issues that EVERYONE
seems to be having with XP) and it's basically the same card as the Hercules
GTXP.  It's also a hell of a buy at $79.

I'll find out how good in about 2 hours.  Airborne is on it's way with my
brand-spankin' new Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 500 watt speaker system :)

In closing, I hate to tell you this, but it looks like Voodoo cards are
basically going to be a no-go under Windows XP :(

You know, it's entirely possible that my sound hardware is just so much
better than what I'm used to (SB Live) that I'm hearing more of the quality
defects in the N4 sound programming.

Papyrus never was real strong in the sound department :)

Don't they farm this out to someone ?

Release Candidate 1, Release Candidate 2.

Normally, once a product hit's RC status the feature set is FROZEN, and it's
strictly bug fixes and clean-up.

Unfortunately in this case MS broke all the rules of basic product
development and there are feature set changes, potentially a lot of them,
between the two RC's and what will be the final released to OEM's this
month.

October 25th should be interesting :)

Try decreasing the Hardware acceleration in Control Panel - Mulitmedia -
Audio - Playback - Advanced - Performance. It used to do the trick sometimes
on previous cards of mine. Running Windows 98 here, so maybe you have
different possibilities.

RC2 must have different drivers for the soundblaster because they are
garbage and half the features don't work. I have reverted back to using the
RC1 drivers with my RC2 and now everything is great again. Why would you
take something that was working in RC1 and mess with it so it doesn't work
anymore??????? Only Microsoft messes with a good thing to mess it
up.............

Yeah, this has become a common complaint.

RC2 was a step backwards for most people.

I lost my scanner in RC2.  It worked (though not with all features) in RC1.
