GPL revisited

by Mitch_ » Fri, 30 Apr 2004 01:55:53

I know its been posted many many times but I for one never really paid much
mind.  With the GPL65 mod OTW soon I figured I'd bring up what GPL needs to
make it modern once again.

What should I install into the base GPL install?  This is what Ive done.

1.2 patch
DX rasterizer
CPU fix
Carsounds (is their only one version?)

Any other suggestions?

TIA

Mitch

That's all you need (apart from Vroc) for a basic install.

If you have an nVidia card try the OpenGL patch, I find it more reliable
on my Gf4200.

Get the GPLEA cars too, and of course if you have applied the moresounds
patch you will need suitable engine sounds.

After that it's just a matter of finding tracks & track updates for the
original 11 to suit your preference.

GPL revisited

by Mitch_ » Fri, 30 Apr 2004 04:02:27

Thanks Malc.

I run a ATI 9700p and I seemed to recall Cat4x's enabled FSAA but when I ran
it I CTD.  Not a big deal as I can run 16x12 res which limits the jaggies.
More curious/bored than anything :)

Where can I get "moresounds" patch you speak of?  The carsound patch seemed
to make the sounds worse at higher revs.

Im really only interested in updating the original tracks at this point so
whets the consensus on the best updates for the originals?   Seems their are
multiple updates available but I want to avoid the bad ones if at all
possible ;)

One other issue.  I use a Momo Racing wheel and the FF needs some help.
IIRC it's a core.ini settings issue?  Does anyone have some basic settings I
can use as a starting point?

Thanks

Mitch

Stick with D3d & use a big res then I guess. I'm sure one of the other
Ati users can sort any niggling problems.

It's the same thing, there is only one util to allow you to have 7
different engine sounds (plus F2F3.wav) and you clearly found the one
;-)

You must apply the patch after the CPU fix (the CPU fix replaces the
gpl.exe so any hacks to the exe must be applied afterwards of course)
and you need the appropriately named wav files or gpl won't work. For
best sound compatability with gpl run dxdiag.exe (start, run...), go to
the sound tab & move the accelleration slider to basic (one above none).
You only need to do this if your sound is screwed up. There are other
solutions but this one works for most people. You can move the slider
back after you exit gpl if you want, but I've never noticed the
difference myself so I just leave it on basic.

For an 'all-in-one' shop of papy track updates try here:
http://hem.bredband.net/klafje/gpl_today.htm

As you say though there are loads ;-) 'Monaco Rocks' is really good too,
have a look on RSC for that & 'a small addon for Monza'

I use a Momo Force, my settings should be almost perfect for you but
it's subjective. I was going to just paste the relevant bit in but since
you've got a new install here's the entire contents of my core.ini:

I tried to install GPL awhile back, but the screen is stuck at 640 x 480 for
some reason. I'm trying to run it in 1024 x 768. It's set correctly in game,
but always runs at the low res. Anyone have any ideas?

A standard install of gpl only supports Rendition, GLide or software for
3D, with a modern graphics card you need to add either the OpenGL or
D3D7 rasteriser patch.

What graphics card & rasteriser are you using?

If you go to display properties, advanced, monitor settings is your
monitor type 'default monitor'? Change it to 'Plug & Play Monitor' &
hopefully it should work okay.

Check your player.ini (and all other files in the Sierra\gpl\ folder)
isn't read-only. Your graphics & other options are stored in the
player.ini, it's in the sierra\gpl\<player_name>\ folder.

NR2003 may be the 'next gpl', but not just yet ;-)

By the time nr2003 was out for 9 months, we already had more
worthwhile tracks than have been made in 5 years of GPL's life.

Not to mention that N2003 squashes GPL like a bug in every area I can
think of besides nostalgia factor (and I'm thinking more about
nostalgia for the sim than the actual sport it's simulating).

GF3,and I already had the D3D7 rasterizer installed and set correctly in
game.

Already set to plug and play.

It isn't read only.

You mean those that mainly go left, left & left?

There are about 400 tracks for GPL (including ovals) and most of the
extra NR tracks are GPL conversions too, I gather.

Except for one area: sheer e***ment.

(Sorry, I tried NR2003 and though it's technically somewhat better it
just doesn't match the thrill of GPL yet - at least for me, but then I'm
European and want to steer to the right sometimes...) But hey, the
engine's good, I'll be looking out for the first "Formula 1 /GPL " mod
for NR2003 - if it happens.

I have just posted my entire core.ini in this thread, have a look for
yourself ;-)

I get font corruption with D3D when I tried it, but I haven't used it
for at least a year. OpenGL gives me no graphics issues, even running in
a window with a 32bit desktop. At 1600x1200 the performance is marginal,
with the framerate occasionally dipping below 36fps using 4xAA & no
FSAA. I can run 1152x864 with 8xAA & 4xFSAA online or off, but since I
run gpl in a window I tend to use the same res for gpl as my desktop so
it fills the screen when I go out on track.

I use all the GPLEA cars and a couple of them use 1024x1024 textures,
and mostly Klas track updates apart from Monaco Rocks.

If D3D works for you then just use that.
